Excerpt from The Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 3: Published in September, 1828, and January, 1829 The epoch at which Arabian cultivation attained its meridian splendour, while the nations of Europe were enveloped in dark ness, cannot fail to catch the attention of the most careless ob server. Its situation too, in the midst of Goths and Celtiberians, is' no less remarkable. The Moors in Spain transmitted the torch of civilization from antiquity to modern ages, and yet the beneficial influence which they exerted on Europe can be but im perfectly developed, and is yet reluctantly acknowledged by the literary world. This ingrat1tude, as well as the historical. Ob scurity which gives birth to it, are both to he referred to the pe enlier character of Arabian literature, of which we shall now pro ceed to take a brief survey, endeavouring to trace its character from its history, and from both these to deduce its influence on modern Europe. Excerpt from The Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 4: April and August, 1829 It isjust to take notice, in abatement ofthis objection, such as. It is, on the score of prolixity, that M. Sismondi has given, at the end of each volume, an excellent summary of the contents, serving as a synoptical compendium of the history, not only for reference, but for information. He had adopted the same plan in his Ita lian Republics, and there are, perhaps, few books, whether of a narrative or argumentative character, in which it might not be usefully employed. The increasing extent of literature will re quire every advantage of machinery to aid the limited capacities of intellectual labour. The index-maker will probably soon take a station in literary usefulness and respectability not much below the lexicographer; in many instances his duties exacta higher de gree of acuteness and knowledge. But in the present state of things this task can in general be only executed with perfect ad vantage by the author himself.
