This textbook is a guide to outside plant fiber optic construction, basically the process of installing the fiber optic cable plant including the work necessary before the fiber optic techs begin splicing, terminating and testing the cable plant. This book was written by Joe Botha of Triple Play Fibre Optic Solutions in South Africa as a textbook for classes he teaches on construction. Joe, an FOA Master Instructor, created the course to fill a need for training OSP construction crews. The book covers topics which are rare in textbooks, practical solutions to designing and installing the fiber optic cable plant. It is an extremely valuable reference book for all owners, designers, supervisors and installers of fiber optic OSP networks.

Optical fiber telecommunications depend upon light traveling great distances through optical fibers. As light travels it tends to disperse and this results in some degree of signal loss. Raman amplification is a technique that is effective in any fiber to amplify the signal light as it travels through transmission fibers, compensating for inevitable signal loss. First comprehensive guide to Raman amplification, a technique whose use has exploded since 1997 in order to upgrade fiber capacity Accessible to professionals just entering the field of optical fiber telecommunications Detailed enough for experts to use as a reference

The field of fibre rope technology has witnessed incredible change and technological advance over the last few decades. At the forefront of this change has been the development of synthetic fibres and modern types of rope construction. This handbook updates the history and structural mechanics of fibre rope technology and describes the types and properties of modern rope-making materials and constructions.Following an introduction to fibre ropes, the Handbook of fibre rope technology takes a comprehensive look at rope-making materials, rope structures, properties and mechanics and covers rope production, focusing on laid strand, braided, low-twist and parallel yarn ropes. Terminations are also introduced and the many uses of rope are illustrated. The key issues surrounding the inspection and retirement of rope are identified and rope testing is thoroughly examined. The final two chapters review rope markets, distribution and liability and provide case studies from the many environments in which fibre rope is used. The Handbook of fibre rope technology is an essential reference for everyone assisting in the design, selection, use, inspection and testing of fibre rope. A comprehensive look at rope-making materials and structures, properties and mechanics Covers rope production including laid strand, braided, low-twist and parallel yarn ropes and rope terminations Rope testing is examined in depth, as well as the key issues surrounding rope retirement

UV-VIS spectroscopy is one of the oldest methods in molecular spectroscopy. The definitive formulation of the Bouguer-Lambert Beer law in 1852 created the basis for the quantitative evaluation of absorption measurements at an early date. This led firstly to colorimetry, then to photometry and finally to spectrophotometry. This evolution ran parallel with the development of detectors for measuring light intensities, i.e. from the human eye via the photo element and photocell, to the photomultiplier and from the photo graphic plate to the present silicon-diode detector both of which allow simultaneous measurement of the complete spectrum. With the development of quantum chemistry, increasing atten tion was paid to the correlation between light absorption and the structure of matter with the result that in recent decades a number of excellent discussions of the theory of electronic spectroscopy (UV-VIS and luminescence sp,~ctroscopy) have been published. Consequently, this extremely ivteresting aspect of molecular spec troscopy has dominated the teaching of the subject both in my own lectures and those of others. However, it is often overlooked that, in addition to the theory, applications of spectroscopic methods are of particular interest to scientists. For this reason, a lecture series about electronic spectroscopy given in the Institute for Physical Chemistry at the Heinrich-Heine-University in Dusseldorf was supplemented by one about "UV-VIS spectroscopy and its applications". This formed the basis of the present book.

It has become obvious that high speed Internet access has become a necessity for everyone not a luxury. The best and most obvious solution, fiber to the home (FTTH, ) has become a reality and is in widespread use worldwide. This handbook is written for those who want to know more about FTTH, whether they are considering a FTTH project for their area or are involved already in planning, designing, building or operating a FTTH network already. The Fiber Optic Association (FOA) is the international professional organization of fiber optics and certifying body for fiber optic technicians. FOA has been involved with FTTH since in the early 2000s. This book began as a compilation of all the FTTH materials from the FOA Guide and FTTH CFOS/H certification curriculum and expanded with additional materials covering FTTH project design and management. The FOA materials come from almost two decades of experience with FTTH including developing training curriculum for training techs for the earliest commercial installations of FTTH and consulting with many diverse FTTH projects. This handbook is written to provide the technical information that can help a service provider understand how to start a FTTH project or a local organization decide if they want to create a do-it-yourself FTTH project run by their local government, electrical coop or a public-private partnership.
