Burrell, commanding the military force in the China seas, be published for general information, announcing the occupation of the island of Chusan, on the east coast of China, by a portion of the force under his command. Brigade Head Quartera: City of Tinghae-heen, July 18th, 184a Mr Lord, --I have the honour to acquaint your lordship, that on the 4th inst., H. M.'s ships " Wellesley," ' Conway," and "Alligator," (to the former of which I had transferred brigade head quarters, in compliance with the wishes of SirGordon Bremer, ) with the troop ship, " Rattlesnake," and two transports, arrived in the anchorage of Chusan harbour; the ships of war taking up a position in front of a hill, upon which there was a large temple, or joss house.
