Excerpt from The First Annual Report of the Orphan Asylum Society, in the City of San Francisco, 1853 In January 1851, at the request of the Ladies of San Fran cisco, public notices were given both from the pulpit and by the press, as to the expediency of establishing an Orphan Asylum on these Western shores, similar to the plan adopted in the Eastern States: but few however responded to the call; and, this little band into whose hearts the Lord had put the desire to honor Him, by extending their kindly aid to those so peculiarly the objects of His divine compassion, (for a Father of the fatherless is God in His holy habitation assembled on the 81st of January 1851, in the First Presby terian Church, and proceeded to take immediate action in the organization of a Society, having for its object the care of Orphan, and half-orphan children. The motive that prompted this step was, that during the scourge which in the autumn of 1850 prevailed in this city, fathers and mothers had been suddenly removed from their children, leaving them in many instances, entirely destitute and unprotected, save by the Orphan's God. The Society, in reviewing the past, cannot but feel that it was He who put it into their hearts, to establish a permanent home for these poor desolate little ones, where, under the motherly care of a christian matron, they are fed and clothed, instructed in all useful branches of education, and above all, in that knowledge which maketh wise unto salvation.
