Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

The author, Gregory Hugh Brown, is the grandson of the books central character, Clover McKinley Palmer. The artists brother, James Roger Brown, did over thirty years of ancestral research which provided the inspiration for the stories and legends within Fields of Clover. The author and his brother are both MFA graduates of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Sadly his brother, an internationally acclaimed artist, passed away in 1997 shortly after finishing his ancestral work, entitled Autobiography in the Shape of Alabama II. This ancestral work fully documented and paid homage to our grandfather and his mother, Mary Dizenia Palmer. It is my intention withFields of Clover to honor these ancestors as well as my brother who did so much to make this book a reality.

Excerpt from The Field of Clover: Engraved by Clemence Housman For a good while Noodle lived on just what he could find in the house, in a hand-to-mouth sort of way, till at last only the furniture and the four bare walls were left to him. One cold winter's night he sat brooding over the fire, wondering where he should get food for the morrow, when he heard feet coming up to the door, and a knock striking low down upon the panel. Out side there was a faint chirping and crack ling sound, and a whispering as of fire licking against the woodwork without. Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers' 1972 song “Roadrunner” captures the freedom and wonder of cruising down the highway late at night with the radio on. Although the song circles Boston's beltway, its significance reaches far beyond Richman's deceptively simple declarations of love for modern moonlight, the made world, and rock & roll. In Roadrunner, cultural theorist and poet Joshua Clover charts both the song's emotional power and its elaborate history, tracing its place in popular music from Chuck Berry to M.I.A. He also locates “Roadrunner” at the intersection of car culture, industrialization, consumption, mobility, and politics. Like the song itself, Clover tells a story about a particular time and place—the American era that rock & roll signifies—that becomes a story about love and the modern world.
