This research supports The Army Family Action Plans (1984-1989) by developing a conceptual model of factors that influence the adaptation of service members and their families to the demands they face from occupying social positions within three life domains: work, family, and community. The development of the family adaptation model is the result of a number of interrelated activities that include literature reviews, secondary analysis of available datasets, expert/user consultations, and field visits to conduct individual and focus-group interviews with soldiers, family members, Army leaders, and service providers. The model will be refined through subsequent research activities. The conceptual model for explaining the factors and processes that underlie family adaptation in the Army relied heavily upon two traditions: the 'Double ABCX' model of family stress and adaptation used by McCubbin and his associates and the 'Person-Environment Fit' or the 'P-E Model' used by French and his associates. The new model has three major parts: the environmental system, the personal system, and family adaptation. (EG).

This practical resource for nursing students, educators, researchers, and practitioners provides content about the conceptual models of nursing that are used as organizing frameworks for nursing practice, quality improvement projects, and research. Chapters break these abstract models down into their core concepts and definitions. Discussions of each model provide examples of practical application so readers can employ these organizing frameworks. This is the only book to apply these models to quality improvement projects, particularly those in DNP programs and clinical agencies. For every conceptual model, diagrams, information boxes, and other visual elements clarify and reinforce information. Each chapter features applications of the conceptual models to a wide variety of examples, including nursing practice assessment and an intervention, a literature review and descriptive qualitative, instrument development, correlational, experimental, and mixed-method studies. Abstract:The resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment, and Adaptation by McCubbin and McCubbin is based on Hill's Family Stress Theory. It provides a method to assess family functioning and the coping techniques utilized to facilitate adjustment and adaptation to a medically stressful hospitalizations and diagnosis. It provides a method to assess stressors, family coping, and how the crisis has disrupted the family functioning. The main emphasis of this model is on resiliency of families and their ability to recover from adverse events. It defines the family strengths and the family's response to health stressors. It assists the health care team in defining areas that interventions may be developed to better assist families in achieving positive adjustment to illness. This theory is utilized to assess a family that has just given birth to an infant diagnosed with short gut syndrome, which has a poor long-term prognosis and is being discharged home with hospice involvement and palliative care. This stressful event impacts the whole family and their ability to find positive avenues to cope is paramount to how they adjust and adapt to this event.
