Excerpt from The Last Secrets: The Final Mysteries of Exploration The first two decades of the twentieth century will rank as a most distinguished era in the history of exploration, for during them many of the great geographical riddles of the world have been solved. This book contains a record of some of the main achievements. What Nansen said of Polar exploration is true of all exploration; its story is a "mighty manifestation of the power of the Unknown over the mind of man." The Unknown, happily, will be always with us, for there are infinite secrets in a blade of grass, and an eddy of wind, and a grain of dust, and human knowledge will never attain that finality when the sense of wonder shall cease. But to the ordinary man there is an appeal in large, bold, and obvious conundrums, which is lacking in the minutioe of research. Thousands of square miles of the globe still await surveying and mapping, but most of the exploration of the future will be the elucidation of details. The main lines of the earth's architecture have been determined, and the task is now one of amplifying our knowledge of the groyning and buttresses and stone-work. Excerpt from Exploration, Discovery and Conquest of the New World: Containing the Thrilling Adventures of Christopher Columbus, Americus Vespucius, John and Sebastian Cabot, Etc His first service was under the command of a relative, a Colombo who had for some time past held the rank of an admiral. We cannot tell the de gree of relationship; probably it was very distant; for, as we have seen, the father of the discoverer was a poor man, a mechanic. In the fifteenth cen tury, a man who worked was thought very little of; quite below consider ation, in fact; and perhaps the old admiral was not very proud of his poor relations. From Sir John Franklin's doomed 1845 search for the Northwest Passage to early twentieth-century sprints to the South Pole, polar expeditions produced an extravagant archive of documents that are as varied as they are engaging. As the polar ice sheets melt, fragments of this archive are newly emergent. In The News at the Ends of the Earth Hester Blum examines the rich, offbeat collection of printed ephemera created by polar explorers. Ranging from ship newspapers and messages left in bottles to menus and playbills, polar writing reveals the seamen wrestling with questions of time, space, community, and the environment. Whether chronicling weather patterns or satirically reporting on penguin mischief, this writing provided expedition members with a set of practices to help them survive the perpetual darkness and harshness of polar winters. The extreme climates these explorers experienced is continuous with climate change today. Polar exploration writing, Blum contends, offers strategies for confronting and reckoning with the extreme environment of the present.

Excerpt from Stories of Exploration and Discovery This little book is the outcome of several years' experience in the teaching of an original course on the History of Discovery. The course has been given to middle forms, and spread over two years' work, with a fortnightly lesson. This has been supplementary to the usual work in History and Geography, and the study of both those subjects has been found to benefit considerably. An aspect of human endeavour and progress that is often only lightly touched upon has received more adequate and connected treatment, with corresponding gain in interest. The course has afforded opportunities for the revision of World History and Geography, from a fresh point of view, but the chief value has been found to lie in the stimulus to wider reading on the part of the pupils. The short list of books appended to this volume illustrates the scope of such reading. It has been difficult to choose, from the great mass of material available, just those stories which are at once representative and important in the general history of exploration, and interesting in themselves. The aim has been to preserve something of a historical outline, though necessarily incomplete, which may prevent the book from becoming merely a series of disconnected biographies, and may serve to illustrate the continuity of human efforts to solve the great problems of exploration.
