They were written by experts for the general reader and combined a comprehensive approach to knowledge with an emphasis on accessibility. The Evolution of Coinage by George MacDonald was first published in 1916. The volume presents a historical account of the development of coinage, incorporating discussion of coin production and numerous illustrative examples.

The sharing economy's unique customer-to-company exchange is possible because of the way in which money has evolved. These transactions have not always been as fluid as they are today, and they are likely to become even more fluid. It is therefore critical that we learn to appreciate money's elastic nature as deeply as do Uber, Airbnb, Kickstarter, and other innovators, and that we understand money's transition from hard currencies to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin if we are to access their cooperative potential. The Evolution of Money illuminates this fascinating reality, focusing on the tension between currency's real and abstract properties and advancing a vital theory of money rooted in this dual exchange. It begins with the debt tablets of Mesopotamia and follows with the development of coin money in ancient Greece and Rome, gold-backed currencies in medieval Europe, and monetary economics in Victorian England. The book ends in the digital era, with the cryptocurrencies and service providers that are making the most of money's virtual side and that suggest a tectonic shift in what we call money. By building this organic time line, The Evolution of Money helps us anticipate money's next, transformative role.

Excerpt from The Evolution of Coinage This manual aims at dealing with only one aspect of a very large subject. Nevertheless the material had to be sought in many quarters. It would thus be impossible within the limits of a preface to indicate the extent of my indebtedness to the labours of others. Nor do I propose to attempt it. I trust, however, that the brief bibliography, while serving the purpose for which it is primarily intended, may at the same time be accepted as providing at least a bare record of the obligations of which I am more immediately conscious. Here and there, particularly in Chapter V, I have drawn somewhat freely upon my own book on Coin Types. Mr. G. F. Hill, the Keeper of Coins in the British Museum, has given me valuable advice and assistance. He even had the patience to go through the manuscript, and both he and his colleague, Mr John Allan, were good enough to read the proofs. "Money may seem hopelessly mundane and culturally meaningless, but it has dominated--and documented--world history since the time of the ancient Greeks. This heavily illustrated book provides a spirited account of the first coinages and their living descendants in our pockets and purses. It explains how people from Jesus to The Beatles have used numismatics to explore the social, political, economic, and religious history of the world"--
