Are we free, whether we know it or not? Or is our sense of freedom merely an illusion? Rudolf Steiner tackles this age-old problem in a new way. He shows that by taking account of our own activity of thinking, we can know the reasons for our actions. And if these reasons are taken from our world of ideals, then our actions are free, because we alone determine them. But this freedom cannot be settled for us by philosophical argument. It is not simply granted to us. If we want to become free, we have to strive through our own inner activity to overcome our unconscious urges and habits of thought. In order to do this we must reach a point of view that recognises no limits to knowledge, sees through all illusions, and opens the door to an experience of the reality of the spiritual world. Then we can achieve the highest level of evolution. We can recognise ourselves as free spirits. This special reprint, featuring the acclaimed translation by Michael Wilson, is being made available in response to public demand.

5 lectures, Berlin, January 25 - February 8, 1916 (CW 166) The age-old question of free will is still a mystery to most people today. Even religious and philosophical circles have difficulty reconciling the concepts of morality, destiny, karma, and necessity with true freedom. Steiner illuminates questions of freedom and necessity, and guilt and innocence, by discussing various aspects of evolution, history, and culture and showing that human beings carry the responsibility for these developments. He shows that the past represents necessity, whereas true freedom belongs to the future. Steiner states that, whereas the human I is revealed in acts of volition on the physical plane, ultimately we will find our true "I"-being only through the Christ impulse and the completely free act of the Mystery of Golgotha. This third volume of Rudolf Steiner's Collected Works was originally his doctoral dissertation. Terse and to the point, it truly is a prelude to his later Philosophy of Freedom -- indeed, one can sense an excitement of discovery that is absent in the latter work. This translation has been thoroughly reworked to make it conform to the late Ronald Brady's masterful introduction, which provides a line-by-line commentary.

Steiner's Philosophy of Freedom (1894) is one of his four "basic books." It is resounding defense of the centrality of thinking in epistemology, and of imagination in ethics.I have long felt that this book exhibits a twofold nature. Certain parts transcend the time of their writing, and stand today as fresh and valid as ever. These parts of The Philosophy of Freedom are immortal.Yet other parts are not. There Steiner deals with worldviews and philosophers (notably Eduard von Hartmann) that are no longer relevant today. And these sections actually dilute the argument; although it is perhaps heretical to say so, they diminish the book as a whole. Moreover, a great deal of the volume's attraction lies in the elegance of its formulations. Again and again Steiner is able to frame his argument in lapidary maxims. These should be highlighted and brought to the fore. Thus I hit on the idea of an abridged version, which would remove the distractions and make the gems stand out.
