Excerpt from The Entomologist's Monthly Magazine, Vol. 11 Edusa in their daily rambles, and, following my instructions, kept a sharp look out for a female specimen, but never saw one. I feel quite sure that if that sex had occurred it must have fallen to the net of one of our party. The occurrence seems to me so remarkable, that I venture to send this notice of it to your Magazine, in the h0pe that it may draw forth some record of a similar experience from other observers. Where the insects came from is a mystery to me, as the corner of Connemara where we were settled down, is a far cry from any of the usual haunts of the species. Excerpt from The Entomologist's Monthly Magazine, 1874-5, Vol. 11 P.s. - Since the foregoing notes were written, I have made a more extended ex amination of the insect, and think it to belong to an undescribed species. It is allied to C. Solidi, Hagen, but is somewhat larger, darker in colour, and with a slightly difierent form of prothorax. The types of solids: are from children's collection, with, unfortunately, no indication of locality. In his Monograph, Hagen, when de scribing C. Breeis, a species from Central and South America, speaks of two examples enclosed in copal. It seems to me scarcely probable that an American species should occur under such circumstances, and quite possible that these entombed individuals may be identical specifically with those new bred from the wood of the cops] tree, for C. Brevis, although decidedly difierent, is yet allied, and a minute examination of insects enclosed in copal or amber is always attended by uncertainty. Two erroneous names have been given for the Kew insect; firstly that of Estantes lateralis, Walker (of. Proc. Linn. Soc., May 7th, and E. Amorous (cf. Nature, ' No. 288, p. 57 probably a misprint, for there is no species of that name) - R. Mol. May 22md, 1874. Excerpt from The Entomologist's Monthly Magazine, 1864-65, Vol. 1 The first Volume of The Entomologist's Monthly Magazine being concluded, its Editors take the opportunity of saying the following few words on their reasons for bringing it forward. They felt that the Entomologists of this country had no periodical, exclusively devoted to their science and procurable at a moderate price, which could be used as a medium for publishing discoveries or observations. With that feeling, and at the request of numerous friends, they instituted this Magazine; resolving at the outset that, although of a sufficiently scientific character to contain descriptions of new species, and memoirs of similarly high interest, - it should also act as a chronicle Wherein any observer could register note-worthy captures, or observations on the transformations, habits, &c., of insects; such records being of great value as a source from which writers of monographs or papers on geographical distribution, &c., may draw much information.
