Having devoted my life to the study of history, I am prompted in my latter days to ask whether one can make sense of it all. --from the Introduction In this book, Bainton pauses to reflect on the importance of studying history because of what it can teach us about human nature. The study of history, then, is the study of human behavior and therefore it helps us understand ourselves. And with this greater self-understanding comes the further inquiry beyond the human--to God, Christ, and Christian ideals. Readers who think history is as dry as dust have never read Bainton! In this book, Bainton shows that history is not only interesting, it's also important. One can indeed make sense of it all.

This volume on Luke-Acts as with all titles in the Texts@Contexts Series highlights readings that make explicit the diverse contemporary contexts of biblical interpreters. The global spread of contributors includes scholarly voices from South Africa, South America and Hong Kong, as well as from the United States. The chapters are organized around four themes. The first examines interpretations of Jesus, looking at his childhood, contemporary context, and his teaching – including whether Jesus' sympathetic response to disease and pain might be used to advocate euthanasia. The second examines social categories: gender, race, and class, including a political and racialized reading of the history of diasporic Black America as a model for reading Acts as a diasporic history. The third examines issues of empire and resistance. The final part looks at society and spirituality, with a focus on modern contemporary contexts.

It seems more than passing strange that Atlanta, where the Sherman war machine attained the maximum in destructive force, should have become the most dynamic power in the rehabilitation of the South; that a city which was fed to the flames in times of internecine conflict, should have become as a shining light, leading an exhausted and impoverished people into peaceful conquests out of which came wealth and happiness undreamed. The intention of the author of this valuable book is to point out the important developments in the history of Atlanta, beginning with the transfer in 1821 of the land upon which the City stands and continuing until 1902.

One of the difficulties that many people have with this last book of the Bible lies in the fact that they do not begin with the text itself but with a particular scheme of interpretation. Then they try to superimpose that scheme of interpretation on the text of Revelation. The author has made in this volume a conscientious effort to begin with the text in its own original context as a series of messages to seven first-century churches. This approach does not in any way entail that all of the events described in Revelation were fulfilled in the first century. That obviously is not the case. What readers need to do is to understand how those seven churches would receive what the apostle John had to say and then derive principles for practical application as we get closer and closer to the return of Christ. This is the only book in God's Word that specifically promises a blessing to those who read it and heed its message. The closer we get to Christ's return, the more important the book of Revelation will become. So we trust that readers of this volume will find biblical principles that can help them face the events and turmoil of the last days with, as one old hymn says, "Loyalty to Christ."
