Elements of Structures and Defects of Crystalline Materials has been written to cover not only the fundamental principles behind structures and defects, but also to provide deep insights into understanding the relationships of properties, defect chemistry and processing of the concerned materials. Part One deals with structures, while Part Two covers defects. Since the knowledge of the electron configuration of elements is necessary for understanding the nature of chemical bonding, it is discussed in the opening chapter. Chapter Two then describes the bonding formation within the crystal structures of varied materials, with Chapter Three delving into how a material’s structure is formed. In view of the importance of the effects of the structure distortion on the material properties due to the fields, the related topics have been included in section 3.4. Moreover, several materials still under intensive investigation have been illustrated to provide deep insights into understanding the effects of the relationships of processing, structures and defects on the material properties. The defects of materials are explored in Part II. Chapter 4 deals with the point defects of metal and ceramics. Chapter 5 covers the fundamentals of the characteristics of dislocations, wherein physics and the atomic mechanics of several issues have been described in detail. In view of the significant influence of the morphologies including size, shape and distribution of grains, phases on the microstructure evolution, and, in turn, the properties of materials, the final chapter focuses on the fundamentals of interface energies, including single phase (grain) boundary and interphase boundary. Discusses the relationship between properties, defect chemistry and the processing of materials Presents coverage of the fundamental principles behind structures and defects Includes information on two-dimensional and three-dimensional imperfections in solids

This book serves as an introductory guide to structures, and it is geared towards students and professionals alike. The author takes the reader through the basics of structures, including the forces that affect them, and how they respond. Through the use of diagrams and examples, the author illustrates how to calculate the strength of different structures. Excerpt from The Elements of Structures: Prepared in the Extension Division of the University of Wisconsin This text has been developed solely with the idea of using it in correspondence-study. It has been the aim of the writer to deal with the fundamentals in structural engineering in a simple and interesting manner and, as far as possible, to make the text speak to the student with a directness similar to that employed by an instructor to a student in residence. In order to obtain these results, some of the usual forms of text-book presentation have been disregarded. The work is intended for students who have had an ordinary training in Arithmetic, Algebra. Plane and Solid Geometry, Logarithms, Trigonometry, Mechanical Drawing, and Strength of Materials. It is a prerequisite course to all the regular structural engineering studies offered by the Extension Division of The University of Wisconsin and treats only of the general methods to be followed in design. The methods in. detail for the different types of structures are given in the courses which follow. The author is indebted to Mr. W. S. Kinne, Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering in The University of Wisconsin, for a careful reading of the proof and for many valuable suggestions and criticisms. The book introduces the basic concepts of the finite element method in the static and dynamic analysis of beam, plate, shell and solid structures, discussing how the method works, the characteristics of a finite element approximation and how to avoid the pitfalls of finite element modeling. Presenting the finite element theory as simply as possible, the book allows readers to gain the knowledge required when applying powerful FEA software tools. Further, it describes modeling procedures, especially for reinforced concrete structures, as well as structural dynamics methods, with a particular focus on the seismic analysis of buildings, and explores the modeling of dynamic systems. Featuring numerous illustrative examples, the book allows readers to easily grasp the fundamentals of the finite element theory and to apply the finite element method proficiently.

In Finite Element Design of Concrete Structures: practical problems and their solutions the author addresses this blind belief in computer results by offering a useful critique that important details are overlooked due to the flood of information from the output of computer calculations. Indeed, errors in the numerical model may lead in extreme cases to structural failures as the collapse of the so-called Sleipner platform has demonstrated.

This excellent text highlights all aspects of the analysis and design of elements related to spatial structures, which have been carefully selected from existing structures. Analysing the design of elements of any full scale structure that contains facilities that have already been constructed makes good economic sense and avoids duplication in respect of research and development, the decision-making process and accurate design criteria for new constructed facilities.
