Excerpt from The Elements of Psychology In addition to the monographs which have been pour ing from the press for twenty years past, we have by this time, both in English and in German, a very large num ber of general text-books, some larger and some smaller, but all covering the ground in ways which, so far as stu dents go, are practical equivalents for each other. The main subdivisions, principles, and features of descriptive psychology are at present well made out, and writers are agreed about them. If one has read earlier books, one need not read the very newest one in order to catch up with the progress of the science. The differences in them are largely of order and emphasis, or of fondness on the authors' parts for certain phrases, or for their own modes of approach to particular questions. It is one and the same body of facts with which they all make us acquainted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Elements of Psychology The particular phenomena of mind as classified subjectively by psychologists generally at the present time under the departments of intelligence, sensi bility, and will, are in this work treated in the light of their respective relation and correspondence to the old and still unquestioned classes of phenomena handed down to us from antiquity under the object ive enumeration of the True, the Beautiful, and the Good. Psychological science, in the light of this correspondence, it is believed, is enabled to exhibit its phenomenain a new clearness and impressiveness. The order of treatment, hitherto adopted, has been in this work varied by giving priority to the department of the sensibility before that of the intelligence. This is unquestionably the order of natural manifestation, as we must have sense of an Object - must be impressed by it - before we can think of it. This natural order, as might be antici pated, prevents much obscurity and confusion and consequent error in the explanation of certain men tal states, particularly those of the imagination and memory. These two states have been generally, and of course very erroneously, presented under the in telligence or cognitive function. Excerpt from Elements of Human Psychology Psychology is not concerned with life in general, but only with certain definite sorts of events in life. It is not the study of bodily growth, nor of digestion or the other processes which maintain the body. The events which we study in psychology are of a different sort from these. They have to do with the interaction between the living creature and the world in which he lives. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Elements of Psychology: Designed Especially for Young Teachers Tm: author's aim in this little book is to set before the reader, in a simple and compact form, some of the lead ing facts of the human mind, - its power and capabilities, the laws that govern its working and growth, - and some truths concerning ways of strengthening and cultivating its powers. He has not been ambitious to make a large book. On the contrary, it has been his constant purpose to use the fewest words that would enable him to make his thought clear. He has tried to say just enough to set forth the leading points of his subject, and to pave the way for a more extended pursuit of the study. In short, the aim has been to make a text-book, that is, a book of texts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Elements of the Psychology of Cognition The present work professes to be an introduction to a very interesting and important subject of study, -the psychology of the intellectual part of the human mind. It is designed principally for the use of students who are beginning their philosophical studies, and the writer has therefore endeavoured to express himself in as clear and simple language as possible. But while intended primarily for this class of readers, it is hoped that those who have already made the acquaintance of the subject will find something to interest them.
