This book focuses on the gradual formation of the concept of ‘light quanta’ or ‘photons’, as they have usually been called in English since 1926. The great number of synonyms that have been used by physicists to denote this concept indicates that there are many different mental models of what ‘light quanta’ are: simply finite, ‘quantized packages of energy’ or ‘bullets of light’? ‘Atoms of light’ or ‘molecules of light’? ‘Light corpuscles’ or ‘quantized waves’? Singularities of the field or spatially extended structures able to interfere? ‘Photons’ in G.N. Lewis’s sense, or as defined by QED, i.e. virtual exchange particles transmitting the electromagnetic force? The term ‘light quantum’ made its first appearance in Albert Einstein’s 1905 paper on a “heuristic point of view” to cope with the photoelectric effect and other forms of interaction of light and matter, but the mental model associated with it has a rich history both before and after 1905. Some of its semantic layers go as far back as Newton and Kepler, some are only fully expressed several decades later, while others initially increased in importance then diminished and finally vanished. In conjunction with these various terms, several mental models of light quanta were developed—six of them are explored more closely in this book. It discusses two historiographic approaches to the problem of concept formation: (a) the author’s own model of conceptual development as a series of semantic accretions and (b) Mark Turner’s model of ‘conceptual blending’. Both of these models are shown to be useful and should be explored further. This is the first historiographically sophisticated history of the fully fledged concept and all of its twelve semantic layers. It systematically combines the history of science with the history of terms and a philosophically inspired history of ideas in conjunction with insights from cognitive science.

What survived from these attempts were Maxwell's four equations of electrodynamics together with the Lorentz force law, formulae that made no attempt to describe an underlying reality but stood only as a mathematical description of the observed phenomena. When the quantum of action was introduced by Planck in 1900 the difficulties that had faced Maxwell's generation were still unresolved. Since then theories of increasing mathematical complexity have been constructed to attempt to bring the totality of phenomena into order with little success. THE amiable insistence of my friend André George has induced me to collect in the present Volume a number of Studies on contemporary Physics written from both the general and the more metaphysical point of view. Each of these Studies forms an independent whole, and can be read by itself. The more deeply we descend into the minutest structures of Matter, the more clearly we see that the concepts evolved by the mind in the course of everyday experience—especially those of Time and Space—must fail us in an endeavour to describe the new worlds which we are entering. One feels tempted to say that the outlines of our concepts must undergo a progressive blurring, in order that they may retain some semblance of relevance to the realities of the subatomic scales. Time and Space, in other words, are too loose a dress for the elementary entities; individuality becomes attenuated in the mysterious processes of interaction, and even Determinism, the darling of an older generation of physicists, is forced to yield. But the great book of Science is never finished: other surprises await us: who knows what mysteries are hidden within the nucleus of an atom, which, although a million million times smaller than the smallest living thing, is yet a universe in itself?

But when we make ourselves humble and kneel for the beauty of the world. When we open our heart for the love that is carried by the beauty, wisdom will come to us and answers will be given for free. Doors will be opened. And we will discover the secrets to open the hidden doors to the unknown worlds. When we go back in time, back to 1672 when Isaac Newton just had discovered the beauty of light, showing all its hidden colors. And we ask the “hidden world showing the beauty of light”: how can we build a world? We will simply find the answers. And knowledge will be given to us for free. Knowledge beyond Superstrings. Knowledge beyond 10-dimensional spaces. Because the world is always in balance. Newton’s second law of motions simply expresses the balance in nature. And balance will be our answer. To build a world, we have to build a world in balance. And that is the only knowledge that has been used to build a new theory beyond Superstrings and beyond 10-dimensional spaces. The discovery journey to this new theory beyond Superstrings will be lonely and dark. Because there will be no guidance from well known physics. Equations have to be reinvented.
