Line widths have been measured on spectra from implosions with the Gamble II generator. The K-shell transitions from sodium ions were observed with a curved crystal x-ray spectrograph and imaged with a pinhole camera. The various contributions to spectral line broadening were analyzed. The conclusion is that the line widths were comprised essentially of a source broadening due to the finite plasma size and a plasma broadening due to the ion motion during the implosion final stage. Despite the comparable contribution from both effects, under our conditions of observation, it is possible to derive an upper limit for the ion velocity to account for the large line widths observed. Keywords: Sodium implosions, X ray spectroscopy, Plasma parameters.

Stark broadening is dominant mechanism of broadening for spectral lines in high-energy plasma. This book focuses on research of stellar plasma, although the results can be used in a study of laboratory plasma as well. Importance of Stark broadening of spectral lines for analysis, interpretation and synthesis of the star spectra, diagnostics, analysis and modeling of stellar plasma is considered as well as the significance of these results for research laboratory, fusion and technological plasma or laser physics. The aim is to determine the previously unknown Stark broadening parameters of the spectral lines of transition metals and lanthanides that do not exist in the literature yet, neither measured by laboratory methods nor theoretically determined, for single electrically charged ions (Co II), double electrically charged ions (Lu III), and triple electrically charged ions (Zr IV), in order to study the impact of line broadening on spectra of hot stars and white dwarfs.
