Download The Effects of Angle-of-attack Indication on Aircraft Control in the Event of an Airspeed Indicator Malfunction Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
"Analysis of accident data by the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, and other sources show that loss of control is the leading cause of aircraft accidents. The high-profile crash of Air France Flight 447, in which pilots failed to recover from a self-induced stall, reinforced concerns over the need for improved stall and angle-of-attack awareness and reinvigorated interest in the debate over the effectiveness of angle-of-attack information displays. The purpose of this research was to empirically evaluate the importance of providing pilots with feedback about fundamental aircraft aerodynamics, especially during non-standard situations and unexpected disturbances. An experiment was conducted using a flight simulator to test the effects of in-cockpit angle-of-attack indication on aircraft control following an airspeed indicator malfunction on final approach. Pilots flying with an angle-of-attack indicator were producing less airspeed and glideslope deviation than pilots who were flying without an angle-of-attack indicator."--Page iii.

Download Position Errors of the Service Airspeed Installations of 10 Airplanes Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The "position" errors of the static systems of 10 service airspeed installations including static-pressure vents on the nose and rear section of the fuselage and pitot-static tubes mounted on the wing, the vertical tail, and the fuselage nose are presented. Tests were conducted at speeds between the stalling speed and 260 miles per hour for four flight conditions. Calibrations are analyzed to show variation of static-pressure error with position of static source, angle of attack, flap setting, and engine power.

Download Pressure Driven Angle of Attack Indicating System Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Technically inclined flyers have long recognized the importance to the pilot of angle of attack information. Unfortunately, a reliable, accurate, and low cost angle of attack indicator has not been available. From the outset, the goal of this research has been to develop an angle of attack indicator as simple, accurate, reliable, and inexpensive as the common airspeed indicator so that it could be used as a primary landing approach aid and for the other flight control functions. This report describes the solution to that problem.

Download A Simulator Study of the Effectiveness of a Pilot's Indicator which Combined Angle of Attack and Rate of Change of Total Pressure as Applied to the Take-off Rotation and Climbout of a Supersonic Transport Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
A simulator study has been made to determine the effectiveness of a single instrument presentation as an aid to the pilot in controlling both rotation and climbout path in take-off. The instrument was basically an angle-of-attack indicator, biased with a total-pressure-rate input as a means of suppressing the phugoid oscillation. Linearized six-degree-of-freedom equations of motion were utilized in simulating a hypothetical supersonic transport as the test vehicle. Each of several experienced pilots performed a number of simulated take-offs, using conventional flight instruments and either an angle-of-attack instrument or the combined angle-of-attack and total-pressure-rate instrument.
