Excerpt from The Early English Baptists, Vol. 2 Only a very few words are necessary in introducing this volume to the attention Of the reader. He will find in the preface to the former one the principles which have guided me, and the end I have had in view in writing this work. The few sentences I pen belong to the apologetic class. Excerpt from The History of the English General Baptists, Vol. 2 of 2: The New Connection of General Baptists The author has too frequently found his duty painfully deli cate. To record the failings of his associates and friends has cost him many a struggle. On these disagreeable occasions, he has laboured to preserve the fidelity of the narrative, and at the same time to do as little violence as possible to personal feeling. One great advantage of the work would have been entirely lost, had these unhappy circumstances been consigned to obllviod. It is hoped, that the perusal of the, deplorable apostacy of some who made high professions, and the contentions and imperfec tions of other sincere but weak Christians, together with the awful mischief which the cause of the blessed Redeemer has sus tained by these means, will cause him that thinketh he standeth to take heed lest he fall: and excite every reader, but especially every minister, to be more earnest and constant in praying for grace to preserve him from giving any occasion to the enemies of the truth to blaspheme, and doubly vigilant in shunning every appearance of evil. The work is now sent abroad with a cheerful hope, that it may, through the blessing of Him, in whose hands are the hearts of the children of men, give the religious world more just ideas of the design, doctrines and character of the New Con nection of General Baptists than have hitherto been entertained, and thus procure for it, that esteem and countenance among other denominations, which it may appear to deserve; and that it may call the attention of those who compose that Connection to the true nature and principles of their union, and amniate them to pursue, with greater zeal, affection and ability, its important objects. Should these hopes be realized, the labour of the writer and the support of his friends will be abundantly rewan ded, in' the increasing prosperity, respectability and purity of that cause. To which they, have, from principle, devoted all their energies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Early English Baptists, Vol. 1 The first attempt at a history of the denomination was made by Thomas Crosby. He was a deacon of the church in Goat Street, over which the excellent Benjamin Stinton presided, and kept a school in Southwark. His work is in four volumes, and is now somewhat scarce. Materials for a similar work had been collected by his pastor. These he placed in the hands of the celebrated historian of the Puritans. The unfair use, scarcely, indeed, the use at all, of the information by Mr. Neal, induced the author to write and issue his work. There is much valuable informa tion of men and events, of one of the darkest and most humiliating periods of our national history, con tained in this work. Crosby was probably conversant with some of the sufferers. His intimacy with the leading ministers in the metropolis was close. Keach and others had ministered to the church with which he was officially connected. From men, competent to speak, he has told us much which, otherwise, would have been lost. To the future historian this writer's work will always be of value. Next in this field of denominational literature appeared Mr. A. Taylor. His work is in two volumes, and was issued more than half a century ago. It is avowedly a History of the English General Baptists. It contains a mass of important information in refer ence to this increasing section of the body, especially of the New Connexion, formed principally by the late Dan Taylor. Many of Mr. Taylor's conclusions will be found more than vindicated, by the documents which will appear in this and the subsequent volume. Excerpt from The History of the English Baptists, Vol. 1: From the Reformation to the Beginning of the Reign of King George I.; Containing Their History to the Restoration of King Charles II I Am well aware, that some things contained in this history may awaken prejudice, censure, or displeasure, and occasion objections and offence, both to the treatise and my self. And I know that some have already declared their opinion, that facts which bring no credit to the persons of whom they are related, ought to be buried in oblivion. But such persons seem to me to be very ignorant of the duty of an historian. In answer to whom I shall only observe, that those heretical persons of the denomination of Baptists, on whom the sword of the magistrate fell so heavy, are yet upon record, and not omitted even by so late an author as the reverend Mr. Neal, and so exposed to the view of men from age to age. Therefore I thought it needful, as well as just, to have these things set in a clear open light, to disbuse all those who may have been imposed upon by false or partial and defective history in this matter, and to remove, or prevent, or allay, scandal, or censure, for time to come; and I am apt to think that many readers now hereafter would have thought me partial, had I not taken notice of them. Neither do I think that it reflects any odium on the English Baptists, that some of their opinion in the point of Baptism, have been charged with heretical notions and heterodox opinions, Name me that body of christians in the world, which may not be equally, if not more, chargeable with the same. And yet I doubt not, Bod bath many faithful servants in this kingdom, amongst all the denominations of christians, who notwithstanding the imputation of heresy and heterodoxy charged on them by others, will be found among the blessed in the kingdom of glory. Excerpt from The History of the English Baptists, From the Reformation to the Beginning of the Reign of King George I, Vol. 3 In Jan. 1739 was published in the Gentleman's Magazine, a letter from one who subscribed himself Marcus; endeavouring to prove dipping essential to Baptism. In April following an answer thereto was published by another who subscribed himself J.L. He endeavoured to prove dipping not essential to Baptism. One part of the controversy turning upon a citation taken by the first from me, thought it proper in the same way to reply and accordingly in August ensuing wrote a letter to Mr. Urban, the supposed author and directed the same to Mr. Cave the printer of the said Magazine. But no notice having yet been taken thereof I shall oblige my readers therewith in this place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. These useful men encountered violent opposition; but were blest with astonishing success and1 were soon joined by many respectable characters. The dissoluteness and 1gnorance of the clergyman now struck him in a new light: and he began to reflect on his own danger, as part of the flock of so careless a shepherd.
