A theoretical and experimental investigation was made of the dynamic behavior of reinforced concrete columns. A lumped mass and spring system was established for the theoreticl investigation. The springs of the system were assumed to have elastic, plastic and viscous properties. The dynamic response of this lumped mass system was solved for some actal pulses and an idealized pulse. Ultimate dynamic loads for plain concrete colmns were determined acording to an excessive strin criterion of failure. Experiments were performed on 108 columns of which 26 were loaded statically and 82 dynamically. Comparison of ultimate dynamic loads of all tested columns to the corresponding predicted values from existing design formulas was made. For plain concrete columns, ultimate dynamic loads predicted by the present theory were aso compared with values from experimental results and from design formulas. In general, these results were in good agreement. (Author).
