20,000 Collisions Waiting to Happen. That's what faces America's driving population each and every day. No wonder. An exploding population of poorly-trained, overconfident, aggressive drivers cram themselves into a barely-growing network of pavement. That's why crashes shut down parts of our metropolitan arteries almost daily. It's why bad weather always brings a spike in the number of incidents. And it's why driving remains the most dangerous thing most of us do in our lives. The Driving Challenge was written to help reduce the odds that you'll be involved in one of those 20,000 daily collisions. It is drawn from Phil Berardelli's years of painstaking observations and research, and from his own experiences as a reformed aggressive driver. Just as in Safe Young Drivers, his acclaimed book for parents and teens, Phil provides sound advice and simple rules that can make a big difference in your safety - starting with the next time you slip behind the wheel. You can be safer and happier on the road. All it requires is a willingness to change - to refuse to accept the status quo on the roads any longer.

During 2020, when millions and millions of people obsessed - sometimes to the point of outright panic - over a contageous virus called COVID, a different plague, which had been gradually receding, began re-emerging with a vengeance. It turned out that 2020 was also a landmark year for deaths and injuries from highway collisions. Both rose by stunning amounts over the previous year. Overall, the jump in highway deaths per miles traveled spiked by 24 percent, the worst such figure in the entire century-long history of such statistics. Why did this happen? It seems that as traffic diminished because of the country's limits on travel and business and social gatherings, those who remained on the roads exhibited unrestrained boldness, with tragic but predictable results. In the 20 years since Phil Berardelli first published The Driving Challenge, experience has shown his safe-driving techniques to be reliable and easy to follow. Now, with the carnage on our highways again spiraling upward, drivers need Phil's advice perhaps more than ever. So, make a small investment in your safety -- take The Driving Challenge!

This incisive book offers an epidemiological study of road users’ consumption of psychoactive substances in Nigeria. It examines psychoactive drug screening and the use of driving simulators to evaluate skills impairment after drinking alcoholic beverages. Portable electronic digital screening devices such as “Oral Screen,” along with other screening devices were used to establish the prevalence of substances of abuse among road users in some selected cities in Nigeria. Blood, saliva, urine, and other biological fluids were screened. Skills impairment, characterized by unsafe driving actions based on the level of blood alcohol concentration (BAC), was evaluated using a driving simulator. The findings were validated by application of a Field Impairment Test (FIT) or modified clinical test of impairment. The implication of the results on everyday highway utilization and the best approach for research into screening for psychoactive drugs are highlighted, along with several recommendations to enhance highway safety.

I do not believe that any book, or any amount of training of the kind given in competition driving courses, will make a good driver of anyone who does not possess a fundamental, inborn aptitude. Above a certain level, driving becomes a sport, demanding of its adepts instant and accurate reflexes combined with perfect judgement. In this sphere, only those who enjoy an outstanding natural gift, and who take a profound interest in the subject, will ever reach the top. For this reason, I had some hesitation before writing this book— I thought, for instance, of Stirling Moss, Mike Hawthorn, Tony Brooks or Jim Clark, who all started winning races in their very first season of serious racing, at an age when they could have had comparatively little driving experience at all. But surely, they are exceptions, and between the two extremes of the born champion and the hopeless incompetent, there must be hundreds of good drivers who, even if they cannot hope to emulate potential world champions, might gain immense satisfaction from taking part in all sorts of motoring events. These are the non-professionals who, as a rule, cannot devote much time to their motoring activities and who will surely greatly benefit from all the experience that can be passed on to them, thereby reducing the time necessary for satisfying results to be achieved, in whatever sort of competition they intend to enter. If they have analytical minds, they will probably also like to have a better knowledge of the basic physics governing the behaviour and the attitude of their car on the road, which, in turn, will help them drive it to better purpose. The greater part of this book deals with racing, rather than rallying or any other sort of competition in which a time element is involved. This is not only because I consider circuit racing to be motor sport in its purest form (where few factors other than achieving the highest possible speed over a given distance are involved) but also because all the general rules of racing apply, basically, to any other sort of driving—after incidentals such as lack of previous knowledge of the road and the presence on it of other traffic and so on, have been taken into account. I therefore think that a better knowledge and understanding of the factors involved in competition driving should be of benefit to any driver, even if he does not take part in any sort of competition, and thereby contributes to greater safety on the road. P. F. Brussels, January 1963
