John Wilson was the son of the Rev. Aron Wilson of Plymouth, from whom he derived a competent patrimony. He became a student of Lincoln's Inn, and was called to the bar on 31st October 1646 5 22 Car. I. -it is believed that he became secretary in Ireland to the Duke of York, through whose influence he was appointed, shortly before the death of King Charles II., to the office of Recorder of Londonderry, but this he seems to have vacated about the time of the siege, which began 18th April and continued till lst August 1689, during which, as there were neither mayor nor sheriff, the vocation of recorder would be a dead letter. It is evident that Wilson shortly after wards went to Dublin, no doubt to join King James there, and that, hoping in the ultimate ascendency of the Jacobite cause, he remained a resident for some years afterwards.
