Excerpt from The Doctor in War As I had more than half anticipated, I found there the finest and most triumphant demonstration of what modern science can do for the protection of the health and life of an army or a nation ever given in history, equaling if not surpassing the hitherto unrivaled victory of the forces which save life on the Panama Canal. Thanks to the personal kindness of the Secretary of War, Mr. Baker, and of my friend Colonel Roosevelt, together with the courtesy of my medical colleagues, I secured letters of introduction and papers which made me successful beyond my expectations in securing permission to see almost every thing of any value or interest from a medical and public health point of view, from the Base Hospitals up to the Aid Posts in the front-line trenches and from the munition works and T raining-camps to the Hospital Ships and the British Fleet. Excerpt from The Doctor's Part, What Happens to the Wounded in War These impressions of a Military Observer are the results of over two years spent by Colonel Church on the Western front as an Observer with our Allies and later on the Staff of the Commanding General of the American Expeditionary Force. His service of twenty years in our army, including duty on the Mexican border and with the First United States Volunteer Cavalry (Rough Riders), in the war with Spain where he won the Medal of Honor for gallantry under fire, well qualifies him for this important duty. The author has presented in non-technical language much information which will be of value to Medical and line officers as they go abroad on active duty with troops in France. The book will also be read with interest by the laity as Colonel Church has the happy faculty of presenting the human side of his experiences in an interesting manner. He has given us a glimpse of certain side lights of the great war not heretofore available. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Herr Doctor Elizabeth hesitated for an instant, and then. She ran back up the grassy slope and around the ruined wall of the old fortress of Bergheim, destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. It was a long way, and she heard her aunt's voice calling after her angrily, but she kept on. She was a tall girl, and she was a little fright ened, and she covered the ground in a way that would have astonished her acquaintances. "A complete account from official sources of the participation of African Americans in World War I including their involvement in war work organizations like the Red Cross, YMCA, and the war camp community service. The text includes an official summary of the treaty of peace and League of Nations covenant. With the entry of the United States into the Great War in 1917, African Americans were eager to show their patriotism in hopes of being recognized as full citizens. However, they were barred from the Marines, the Aviation unit of the Army, and served only in menial roles in the Navy. Despite their poor treatment, African-American soldiers provided much support overseas to the European Allies as well as at home" -- Bookseller's description.

Excerpt from An American Physician in Turkey: A Narrative of Adventures in Peace and in War When I began this book I meant to write only of the siege and flight and the events that led up to them, preceding these chapters by a chap ter or two of travel experiences and memorable conversations with Turk and Christian, but I was persuaded, instead, to tell the whole story of my life in Turkey. Should there seem to be too much ego in these reminiscences, its presence may be explained by the fact that while writing I have seemed to myself to be conversing with those whom I have met face to face, and talked to from lecture platform and in hospitable homes all over the United States for the last two years: listeners who have shown and expressed such kind interest in my personal experiences that I have been tempted to enter into considerable detail in the present volume, which is intended especially for their perusal. Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others.
