Excerpt from The Dictum of Reason on Man's Immortality, or Divine Voices Outside of the Bible We are so made that, when we are normal, ' our Reason rules us: hence, so far as we are concerned, the Bible needs the endorsement of our reason before it can become a practical force; A Bible contrary to reason would be a rejected Book in the human world. The Dictum of Reason: That is one of the greatest powers known to humanity. Let no man despise Reason, for God does not. When he would win the faith of man, he appeals to it. Come and let us reason together saith the Lord. When reason speaks without bias, and according to the facts which it cognizes and collates, its deductions are none other than the voice of God, from which there is no appeal. As men, we were created in the image of God; and in nothing do we see more of God's image than in that faculty which we call reason. Excerpt from The Testimony of Reason From the middle of the last century to the present time a great wave of unbelief in the principles of revealed religion has been passing over the minds of some of the most learned men. The dicta of the Scriptures have been ignored by them and nothing believed except it be agree able to natural reason. What are supposed to be the teachings of science have largely dis placed faith. Those who have rejected the doctrines of orthodox Christian churches are not to be regarded with either indifference or pity. N 0 man lives who is a greater lover of truth than the scientist. The pursuit of science is the pur suit of truth, and the student of science makes truth his deity. He believes whatever facts teach; he follows blindly, joyfully where his reason leads. Excerpt from The Religious Instinct of Man Paul's'appearance in Athens was one of the most significant events connected with the first ef forts to evangelize the pagan world. This apostle of Christianity came to preach where the voice of Demosthenes had thrilled the listening multitudes; to hold up a moral standard where Aristotle had taught his ethics; to discourse on world-origin where Hesiod's Theogony was familiar; to speak of immortality where Plato had reasoned well, and where Socrates had died a martyr to his glorious hope. Excerpt from The Natural Evidence on the Being of God, and the Immortal Life I have often used the words Nature and Universe, where I should have nseti the name of the Creator, but for the purpose of meeting the spirit of doubt npon its own grounds. Placing hut little value upon the points which divide sects, and regarding them more as apparent than as real antagonists, l have deemed it more important to write upon princi ples which lie at the foundation of Morals and Religion, which unite, rather than divide mankind. Excerpt from The Question of Ages: Or Outlines of Testimony in Relation to Life, Death, and Immortality The eighth Psalm is a prophecy concerning "The Christ." In it, David personates the Lord Jesus; who is, therein, shown to stand as man - "the second man" - at the head of all terrestrial things. As standing on the earth, and addressing Jehovah, the Father, he expresses the sentiments of perfect humility and adoring praise - a devout admiration of the infinite greatness, and the condescension of God: "When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?" Ps. 8: 3, 4. The question, What is man? - as found in the psalm, is intended to denote the humility and admiration now described; but the form of words used will serve to denote a question of ages, among the speculative classes of mankind. Our present purpose is to show, that to this question, men have offered a reply, in the way of ecclesiastical teaching; and God has supplied an answer, in the Scriptures of truth. Our immediate concern is with the reply of wise and prudent men. From the various schools of ecclesiastical tuition, a reply has come forth, the substance of which may be thus condensed:- "Man is an immortal being - mortal, as to his body, but immortal in his soul. The soul of man is allied to angels - is allied to God. The soul of man is an immortal principle to which consciousness always attaches. Excerpt from Essence of Reason See Rev. 21 chapter, and 8 verse. For further proof about such a place turn to Rev. 19 chap., and 20 verse, and many other places in the Bible. Hellfire, brimstone, and the devils are mentioned. Such tales of love and vice, were distilled into my young mind at home, and in the church as well. Just think, what poor children are taught to believe. No matter how unreasonable the Bible may appear to y, ou you must believe. No matter how impossible the miracles may seem, you must believe. N o matter how cruel the laws your heart must approve of them all. This is what the Church calls liberty of thought. W here is the evidence that Christ was, and is God? Who can. Furnish the evidence that there is a God that made all things from nothing Where is the evidence that the places called Heaven and Hell exist There is none. Where is the evidence that angels, ghosts, devils and gods ex ist? There is none. Have those beings been seen or touched Do any of our senses certify to their existence? No. We now know that Heaven is not just above the clouds, and that Hell is not just below the earth. The telescope has done away with the ancient Heaven, and the revolving world has quenched the flames of the ancient Hell. Those imaginary worlds have disappeared for good. Since I received the new search light of rea son I applied it to the Bible, to see if it would stand inspection on what I was taught by my parents, and by preachers of the Gospel.
