Excerpt from The Devil: A Lecture A little while ago I delivered a lecture on Super stition, in which, among other things, I said that the Christian world could not deny the existence of the Devil; that the Devil was really the keystone of the arch, and that to take him away was to destroy the entire system. A great many clergymen answered or criticised this statement. Some of these ministers avowed their belief in the existence of his Satanic Majesty, while others actually denied his existence but some, without stating their ovvn position, said that others believed, not in the existence of a personal devil, but in the personification Of evil, and that all references to the Devil in the Scrip tures could be explained on the hypothesis that the Devil thus alluded to was simply a personification of (evil. When I read these answers I thought of this line from Heine: Christ rode on an ass, but now asses ride on Christ. Now, the questions are, first, whether the Devil does really exist; second, whether the sacred Scriptures teach the existence Of the Devil and of unclean spirits and, third, whether this belief in devils is a necessary part of what is known as orthodox Christianity. Excerpt from The Devil and I: A Novel I shall not exaggerate. I have neither the desire nor the necessity to do so. The truth, strange as it is, is superlatively true. I am no longer among the living. I write from under the vault in which I am buried. Others have been buried alive, but they have speedily and effect ually died. I am perpetually dying. However, the power to feel grows less as the dying goes on, and I am really dead to every sense but a dulling, numb ing pain that never leaves me. This is the last phase of suffering; for suffering has its limit, and once it is reached, to experience again the fulness of pain, the victim must have again every sense re born, requickened by hope. I have nothing to hope f Or, and I am only waiting for the hour when I shall be as dead to myself as I am now dead to the world. Excerpt from The Devil Unmasked Satan and I first met at the foot of the holiness mountains, where the. Road forks, one going through the plains of sin to the land of perdition and the other up the mountain to the portals of glory. I was very much surprised when I first saw him; he did not look anything like I had supposed he would. I had often seen his picture and supposed that he had long horns, cloven feet, a skeleton - like body, and a fiendish look. If he had any horns, they were covered up; if he was cloven footed, I could not detect it, and, instead of being a lean, skeleton-like person, he was plump and looked as though he was well kept; in fact, he looked real genteel and dignified, more like an angel of light than the old-time devil people used to talk about. Instead of being a horrible, ugly, frightful being, he looked like a high-toned gentleman, who would make a very favorable impression on almost anybody.
