Excerpt from Under Scott in Mexico It was not long after this that Texas joined the United States. The feeling in Mexico was very bitter, and a dispute over the southern boundary line of Texas soon brought on a war which, at this latter day, seems hardly justified, but which was, nevertheless, fought with valor upon both sides. The real opening of the contest was along the Rio Grande River, and in the second volume of our series, called Under Taylor on the Rio Grande. Excerpt from The Infidel, or the Fall of Mexico, Vol. 1 of 2: A Romance When, therefore, we relate any very curious and mar vellons matters, appertaining to Mexican literature, though we speak upon the authority of historians, we invite the reader to receive our accounts with some grains of allow ance. With the exception of a few arbitrary symbols, ex pressive of numerals, and a few other objects of constant recurrence, the picture-writing of Mexico spoke in ideas, not words; and it may therefore be assumed, that it could express nothing that did not, or by a stretch of ingenuity, could not be made to, address and explain itself to the e e. Legend has it that twenty miles of volcanic rock rising through the landscape of northern Bohemia was the work of the devil, who separated the warring Czechs and Germans by building a wall. The nineteenth-century invention of the Devil's Wall was evidence of rising ethnic tensions. In interwar Czechoslovakia, Sudeten German nationalists conceived a radical mission to try to restore German influence across the region. Mark Cornwall tells the story of Heinz Rutha, an internationally recognized figure in his day, who was the pioneer of a youth movement that emphasized male bonding in its quest to reassert German dominance over Czech space. Through a narrative that unravels the threads of Rutha's own repressed sexuality, Cornwall shows how Czech authorities misinterpreted Rutha's mission as sexual deviance and in 1937 charged him with corrupting adolescents. The resulting scandal led to Rutha's imprisonment, suicide, and excommunication from the nationalist cause he had devoted his life to furthering. Cornwall is the first historian to tackle the long-taboo subject of how youth, homosexuality, and nationalism intersected in a fascist environment. "The Devil's Wall" also challenges the notion that all Sudeten German nationalists were Nazis, and supplies a fresh explanation for Britain's appeasement of Hitler, showing why the British might justifiably have supported the 1930s Sudeten German cause. In this readable biography of an ardent German Bohemian who participated as perpetrator, witness, and victim, Cornwall radically reassesses the Czech-German struggle of early twentieth-century Europe.

Excerpt from With Cortez in Mexico: A Historical Romance The owner of this vessel, Sedeno by name, was a wealthy merchant who did a thriving business with the territory already discovered. Now he had on board his ship all kinds of utensils and supplies for the settlers of Trinidad, as well as the mines, which were situated near the town. He was in a good humor, for the sky was clear and Trinidad not far away. He smiled with satisfaction as he stood on deck gazing at the distant coast of the island, and calculated how much money this trip would bring him in. Aside from him stood a young Spaniard, with black curly hair and handsome face. He stood there absorbed in thought, with his quiet, grave, in fact almost melancholy bearing, affording a striking contrast to the gay crowd of sailors and other passengers. Sedeno's glance fell upon the young man; the owner of the ship now for a while seemed lost in thought himself; then he smiled in his usual manner and went up to the passenger. "Well, we will soon land, Mr. Ramusio," he said, addressing him. "Cuba has a great future before her. She is prosperous; cities spring up like mushrooms on the island. All sorts of people are needed there: field laborers, mechanics, soldiers, and also cultured men who can wield the pen.
