The Determination of Epoxide Groups describes the advantages and limitations of the methods for determination of 1,2-epoxide groups of various kinds. Chapter 1 examines the chemical reactivities of different epoxides under various conditions, which is of fundamental importance in the choice of the analytical method to be used. Chapter 2 explores most of the analytical work on epoxides involving ring-opening with HCl or HBr. Chapter 3 deals with the alternative techniques involving quantitative rearrangement of epoxides, or ring-opening under non-acidic conditions. This chapter also contains descriptions of various miscellaneous analytical techniques, including very sensitive methods, as well as the use of infrared spectroscopic techniques for analysis of epoxides and the study of their reactions, particularly the cure of epoxy resins. Chapter 4 summarizes the advantages and limitations of the various methods, along with the main factors affecting choice of experimental. This book is of great value to analytical and organic chemists, researchers, and students.

Monographs in Organic Functional Group Analysis, Volume 3: Determination of Carboxylic Functional Groups focuses on the quantitative determination of acid chlorides, esters, carboxylic acids, anhydrides, lactones, and amides. The monograph first takes a look at the determination of carboxylic acids. Countercurrent and electrophoretic separation of organic acids; polarography of organic acids; acid-base equilibrium in non-aqueous media; and titrimetric determination of acids are discussed. The book also examines the determination of acid anhydrides, chlorides, and esters. The characteristics and composition of acid chlorides and anhydrides, as well as the saponification and spectroscopic methods used in the identification of esters, are presented. The book also evaluates the methods and use of Grignard’s reagent in the determination of amides. The text also presents an analysis of binary and ternary mixtures. Mixtures of acids and acid chlorides, differentiation of acids, mixtures of acids and esters, and mixtures of acids and amides are discussed. The monograph is a vital reference for readers interested in the quantitative determination of acid chlorides, esters, carboxylic acids, and other related compounds.

Epoxy resins have been commercially available for about 45 years and now have many major industrial applications, especially where technical advantages warrant their somewhat higher costs. The chemistry of these resins is fascinating and has attracted study by many very able scientists. The technological applications of the epoxy resins are very demanding and there are many new developments each year. The aims of the present book are to present in a compact form both theoretical and practical information that will assist in the study, research and innovations in the field of epoxy resin science and technology. The literature on epoxy resins is so vast that it is not possible to be encyclopaedic and that is not the function of the present text. It is the editor's hope that the selection of topics discussed will provide an up-to-date survey. There is some overlap in the chapters but this is minimal and so each chapter is essentially self contained. As with all chemicals there are toxicological and other hazards. These are not dealt with in this text since a little knowledge can be dangerous, but material supplied can provide information regarding any safety precautions that may be necessary. However, often these precautions are not onerous and epoxy resins, or more specifically the hardeners, can be handled readily. It is hoped that this text will provide an up-to-date outline of the science and technology of epoxy resins and stimulate further research into unsolved problems and assist further technological developments.
