Winthrop Smart was born at Newmarket, New Hampshire about 1740. He was a son of Joseph Smart of Exeter, N.H. He married Rebecca Nickerson, daughter of Joshua Nickerson, a Baptist minister, and settled in the town of Eaton, N.H. Winthrop was a blacksmith by trade. He died in 1814 at Prospect (now North Searsport). They had twelve children. This book traces the descendants through their oldest child, Joshua Smart (1769-1859), born at Eaton, N.H., died at Swanvill, N.H. He married Hannah Nickerson 1791. She was born in Harwich, Cape Code in 1773, where the Nickersons first settled, William Nickerson from Norfolk, England being the progenitor of the name in New England. The emigrant ancestor of the Smart family was John Smart, who came from Norfolk Co., England to Hingham, Massachusetts in 1635 with his wife and two sons, John Jr. and Robert. In 1639 they moved to Exeter, New Hampshire. Descendants live in Maine, New Hampshire, Washington D.C., Califor- nia and elsewhere.
