Excerpt from The Dental Review, Vol. 1: November, 1886 October, 1887 Each field in histology seems to be worked over and pondered over anew, as new pathological factors have fastened the atten tion of specialist or general practitioner. This is the case whether the new factor be based upon some new fact discovered, or theory propounded; for each thought that gives promise of developing truth must be tried and tallied with the form elements with which it is associated. Not illustrated. 1887 edition. Excerpt: ...to serve during the year 1887: President, Manuel A. Aguilera; Vice-President, Florencio Cancio; Recording Secretary, Ignacio Rojas; Assistant Recording Secretary, Manuel Mediavilla; Corresponding Secretary, Federico Poey; Treasurer, Jose E. Barrena; Librarian, Rodriguez Eladio. A purse of $400 has been forwarded to the English committee of the Waite testimonial fund, which would have been largely increased had it been known that Americans might assist in this undertaking. All dentists on this side of the Atlantic sincerely sympathize with Dr. Waite in the misfortune which has befallen him, (the loss of eyesight). None other could be more distressing to a dentist whose sole capital in practice he is suddenly deprived of. " TE'raNINE,"--Nicolaier, astudent in Fliljges laboratory, claims to have discovered the special bacillus or micro-organism causing lockjaw, and Bruger puts forth claims that the disease is also due to the ptomaine " tetanine " produced in certain stages of putrefaction. This is a definite chemical compound which can be isolated by appropriate chemical processes. When injected beneath the skin it will produce a disease developing all the phenomena of lockjaw. ' It will be of great benefit to most operators to ligate loose teeth, with gold wire, previous to making the attempt to remove deposits from the roots, or injecting medicines into pockets or between the roots and gums. Twelve, fourteen or six teen carat gold wire may be drawn down to the size of ordinary binding wire, and after annealing, it will hold teeth in position by weaving it into figure of 8 shape, around the requisite number. The ends may be twisted and bent towards the gum but not touching it. The wire need not be doubled as it...

Excerpt from The Dental Review, 1916, Vol. 30: Devoted to the Advancement of Dental Science The first point I wish to emphasize by way of discussion is the opening into the root canal. I think most of us probably fail there. It is the most important step because it is the first step. We must give Sufficient room for direct access into each canal. That would apply to the molar teeth more particularly. I think the frequent use of alcohol around and in the field of operation is also indicated, not only because it is a splendid cleansing agent, but for its dehydrating properties. I think, also, that the technic of the broaches ln the canal should be further emphasized, as long as we are emphasizing the chemical cleansing. The use of sulphuric acid and sodium bicarbonate is certainly indicated in the difficult canals more particularly. Personally, I have been using potassium hydroxid in place of the sodium bicarbonate. It has been a rare treat to have heard Dr. Buckley and Dr. 'e-isen discuss this paper. There is hardly anything further that I would care to say other than what has already been said. I thank you. Excerpt from The Dental Review, 1908, Vol. 22: Devoted to the Advancement of Dental Science The principal symptom is the pain, similar to the chronic dento alveolar inflammation, which in fact always coexist in a certain degree. The pain is local and reflex; the root is painful to percussion; the overlying gum tissue is slightly more red than normal, but is not painful to the touch; the root is very loose. A good symptomatic sign is afforded by the flowing of a sero-purulent liquid from the radicular canal and it can not be stopped by any means. The anti septic canal dressing is useless. B-ut such a fact is common also to canal perforations, but then the perforation can be detected, the root is not painful to the touch and a dressing with alum stops the dis charge. Unilocular Cysts - Congenital or not, the unilocular cysts after reaching a certain volume do not excite any pain. They are equally common in both jaws. They usually are not any larger than a man darin, but occasionally they can reach the volume of a child's head. According to its volume and consequently the more or less destruction of' the bony wall, the palpation gives a sense of hardness or fluctuation or the peculiar parchment-like crepitation. In general they are not movable at their nares. The oral mucus is movable upon the tumor and is stasio. If the tumor has a fistula, caused usually by the ex traction of the root in causa, the round form of the cavity and its dimension can be detected with an explorator. The condition of the dental system is important. If the cyst is noncongenital, the teeth in connection with it are decayed and loose. If the cyst is congenital we must look for the trouble which caused it during the evolution of the teeth. We can find malpositions or absence of teeth. The disease is local and generally health is not injured. Some of the symptoms are in relation with the origin and seat of the cyst. Excerpt from The Dental Review, 1893, Vol. 7: Devoted to the Advancement of Dental Science In the first place, these preparations are proprietary, their composition is secret. They are wonderful discoveries known only to the manufacturer, whose identity is usually hidden under the name of The Blank Manufacturing Company. The company, Of course guarantees the virtues and the absolute safety Of its goods, and pledges you that it contains no cocaine or other dangerous drug, and will furnish pages of more or less illiterate testimonials, both lay and professional. But who are they, the Company? In making guarantees Of such vital importance, it is very pertinent to inquire into the Character and scientific attainments of those guaranteeing. How do you know, gentlemen, that in accepting the guarantee of manufacturers whom you do not know, and never heard of, except through their advertisements, you are relying on men for whose scientific attainments or truthfulness you would have a most profound contempt, if you but knew them! And the same may be said about the endorsements. Many of them are honest in their beliefs no doubt. But many Of these testimonials bear internal evidence in their bad grammar and unscientific state ments Of their utter worthlessness. Indeed, the enthusiastic reck lessness of the endorsement is usually in inverse proportion to the attainments of the endorser. What weight Should be attached to the opinion Of any one who feels competent after Six or eight weeks' use of a remedy, the composition Of which he knows absolutely nothing, to state positively that it is absolutely harmless and relia ble, and boasts of the thousands of teeth he was enabled to sacrifice by its aid in that time? If you are thinking of investing any money in the stock of any company Or enterprise, as a prudent business man, you investigate most carefully the representations made to you; and the character Of those composing the company, as well as those endorsing them, is especially looked into. How much more cautious should you then be in a matter of such vital importance as the adoption Of methods and drugs you propose to use on those who trust themselves in your hands, the effects Of which'might result in casting a Cloud over your whole future professional career. Excerpt from The Dental Review, Vol. 8: Devoted to the Advancement of Dental Science The principles of general surgery are closely involved with those of operative dentistry. The practice of dentistry is in itself largely that of minor surgery. The terms dental surgery and dental surgeon, though largely fallen out Of use, are sufficiently appropriate to warrant their continuance.
