Our daughter’s escapades started when she was eleven and our souls were shredded through the years. She was 35 when she overdosed. Through many trials of hope then despair walls were built up and torn down. I describe in this book just a fraction of those trials. I’m hoping someone can relate and lessen their pain. Every page tells a story.

The one thing she's lost is the only thing that can save her... A brokenhearted molecular biologist is forced to become the first human to undergo gene editing to save her soul and preserve the human race in this propulsive thriller that's too close to tomorrow's reality. Molecular biologist Kayla Covington has been called the most dangerous woman on earth. Ten years after her experimental treatment failed to save her twelve-year-old son, she's on the brink of the world's first human gene-editing trial. Her discovery, that unlocks the genetic code of the only immortal animal in the world, will reverse aging, save millions of people, and cure her ailing father, salvaging what's left of her broken family. But when a fiery explosion rips through her lab, she watches masked intruders execute her team. Scrambling into the night with the only surviving sample, she knows two things: The prefilled syringe containing the age-reversing serum can't make it through the night, and the second injection that stops the serum's process has been stolen. In desperation, Kayla does the only thing she can to preserve her life's work: she injects herself. Now, wanted by the FBI for the killings and hunted by the deadliest contract killer the CIA has ever known, Kayla must rely on her jilted lover and a young reporter hellbent on the truth to find her attackers and recover the antidote, and in the process prevent the weaponization of the greatest breakthrough in the history of medicine-or die from her own creation in five days. The Dark Side of Angels is an extraordinary and entertaining thriller that blends a real scientific discovery and intriguing fiction to examine to moral battleground of genetic modification.

In this book, one of the world’s leading social theorists presents a critical, alarmed, but also nuanced understanding of the post-traditional world we inhabit today. Jeffrey Alexander writes about modernity as historical time and social condition, but also as ideology and utopia. The idea of modernity embodies the Enlightenment’s noble hopes for progress and rationality, but its reality brings great suffering and exposes the destructive impulses that continue to motivate humankind. Alexander examines how twentieth-century theorists struggled to comprehend the Janus-faced character of modernity, which looks backward and forward at the same time. Weber linked the triumph of worldly asceticism to liberating autonomy but also ruthless domination, describing flights from rationalization as systemic and dangerous. Simmel pointed to the otherness haunting modernity, even as he normalized the stranger. Eisenstadt celebrated Axial Age transcendence, but acknowledged its increasing capacity for barbarity. Parsons heralded American community, but ignored modernity’s fragmentations. Rather than seeking to resolve modernity’s contradictions, Alexander argues that social theory should accept its Janus-faced character. It is a dangerous delusion to think that modernity can eliminate evil. Civil inclusion and anti-civil exclusion are intertwined. Alexander enumerates dangerous frictions endemic to modernity, but he also suggests new lines of social amelioration and emotional repair.

This work is an introspective approach to major religious texts. We are compelled to see things in the way that they have been prepared for us to see, though for convenience we suffer the burden of ignorance. Beyond the conventionally accepted methods of religious study there is a vast wealth of information waiting for those willing to inconvenience themselves out of the grasp of ignorance. The true master does not cling to systems or set ceremonial practices, they simply see systems and practices as bridges that lead to higher ground. The master is not even attached to his own ideas. In fact at the level of mastery there is no attachment there is only investment. Investment in those actions that make sense and bring about results; the present is the masters arena.

The two-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter behind the groundbreaking album Exile in Guyville traces her life and career in a genre-bending memoir in stories about the pivotal moments that haunt her. “Honest, original and absolutely remarkable.”—NPR (Best Books of the Year) When Liz Phair shook things up with her musical debut, Exile in Guyville—making her as much a cultural figure as a feminist pioneer and rock star—her raw candor, uncompromising authenticity, and deft storytelling inspired a legion of critics, songwriters, musicians, and fans alike. Now, like a Gen X Patti Smith, Liz Phair reflects on the path she has taken in these piercing essays that reveal the indelible memories that have stayed with her. For Phair, horror is in the eye of the beholder—in the often unrecognized universal experiences of daily pain, guilt, and fear that make up our humanity. Illuminating despair with hope and consolation, tempering it all with her signature wit, Horror Stories is immersive, taking readers inside the most intimate junctures of Phair’s life, from facing her own bad behavior and the repercussions of betraying her fundamental values, to watching her beloved grandmother inevitably fade, to undergoing the beauty of childbirth while being hit up for an autograph by the anesthesiologist. Horror Stories is a literary accomplishment that reads like the confessions of a friend. It gathers up all of our isolated shames and draws them out into the light, uniting us in our shared imperfection, our uncertainty and our cowardice, smashing the stigma of not being in control. But most importantly, the uncompromising precision and candor of Horror Stories transforms these deeply personal experiences into tales about each and every one of us.
