Daddy Longlegs will have kids singing along with his bluesy song as they read this hip picture book! He’s one cool cat who scats, an eight-legged drummer keeping the beat. He moves and grooves and gets funky across the floor. And one thing’s for sure: no one’s better at getting mellow on a saxophone, and bringing rhythm and soul into every child’s home. Mike Ornstein’s catchy rhyming text is irresistibly musical, and Lisa Kopelke’s witty art features plenty of fun details and an urban, bohemian flair; her sunglasses-wearing title character seems to come straight out of the Beat generation. A glossary of blues terms, a list of instruments played by the characters, and a page of facts about daddy longlegs and blues music provides extra entertaining info.

John Price appears to have thrown in the towel. He has spent the last year struggling to support his family, neglecting to spend time with his wife and children, and becoming increasingly cynical about the degraded state of the natural world around him. After a heart-attack scare, however, his wife demands that he start appreciating all the "good things" in his life: their mouse-infested old house, their hopelessly overgrown yard, and most of all, the joys and humiliations of parenthood. In his quest to become a better father, Price faces many unexpected challenges—like understanding his grandmother’s decision to die, and supporting his nature-loving sons’ decision to make their home a "no-kill zone" for all living creatures. Still he finds the second chance he was looking for—to save himself and, perhaps, his small corner of an imperfect yet still beautiful world.

Jerusha Abbott at 18 years is the eldest orphan at John Grier Home orphanage. All petty responsibilities of the kids at the orphanage rest on her tender shoulders. One fine day, her mundane life undergoes a surprising change when an unknown trustee of the orphanage offers to pay for her college education as he is very impressed by one of her essays! He promises her a liberal monthly allowance and insists on being anonymous. His only condition is that Jerusha should send him monthly letters and keep him posted about her life in college, but not to expect any replies from him. What follows is an insight into Jerusha’s unexplored, fascinating world of college life through the letters that she writes to her unknown benefactor. She addresses him adoringly as “Daddy-Long-Legs” as she had seen his long shadow once while he was leaving the asylum. She shares a love–hate–anger–gratitude relationship with him. Finally, at the end of the story, the identity of Daddy-Long-Legs is revealed. Is her godfather someone familiar or a total stranger?

The first Wednesday in every month was a Perfectly Awful Day-a day to be awaited with dread, endured with courage and forgotten with haste. Every floor must be spotless, every chair dustless, and every bed without a wrinkle. Ninety-seven squirming little orphans must be scrubbed and combed and buttoned into freshly starched ginghams; and all ninety-seven reminded of their manners, and told to say, "Yes, sir," "No, sir," whenever a Trustee spoke. It was a distressing time; and poor Jerusha Abbott, being the oldest orphan, had to bear the brunt of it. But this particular first Wednesday, like its predecessors, finally dragged itself to a close. Jerusha escaped from the pantry where she had been making sandwiches for the asylum's guests, and turned upstairs to accomplish her regular work. Her special care was room F, where eleven little tots, from four to seven, occupied eleven little cots set in a row. Jerusha assembled her charges, straightened their rumpled frocks, wiped their noses, and started them in an orderly and willing line toward the dining-room to engage themselves for a blessed half hour with bread and milk and prune pudding.

It was WWII and the film capital was trying to adjust to blackouts, rationing, and millions of servicemen passing through town. Motion pictures, a powerful aide to the righteous allied cause, were being turned out by the hundreds. Studios conducted huge, glittering bond drives while formations of B-24s overhead dipped their wings. In the midst of all this, Hollywood stunt man Tom Driscoll, classified as 4-F and unable to do what he wanted most - fight for his country - was about to serve his country in a way he never expected. This is a fascinating story of a Hollywood long gone, when everyone banded against the enemy... Almost everyone.
