Excerpt from The Critical Review, or Annals of Literature, 1804, Vol. 2: Extended and Improved The eastern coast is less important, as it is almost inaccessible in many parts, and the road lies almost on the shore. We do not perceive on what authority the boundary is laid down in this part. It appears in general that the hills and forests have limited European possessions; and those on the eastern coast seem to extend to the sea. Excerpt from The Critical Review; Or Annals of Literature, Vol. 1: Extended and Improved This Journal has now lived half the life of man; and of its first Conductors none remain. In this interval, various alternations in situation and circumstances must have influenced our conduct; but the first plan was so wife and judicious, that we have scarcely in any instance deviated from it, except, where from the different changes, our predecessors would probably have done the same. Since our last Address a new and unexpected source of difficulty has arisen. - The French Revolution forms an aera in history of considerable importance; and the controversies which this event and the conduct of the National Assembly have occasioned, compelled us to make every effort to keep pace with public anxiety. With this subject we found the rights of men intimately connected; our own constitution was again brought forward, and we had almost reason to dread innovations at home, from the zeal, the impetuosity of reformers, who were apprehensive that our neighbours would overtake us in the career. It was a subject on which we could not look with indifference; and, having had occasion to give our opinions in the beginning, it was necessary to be cautious left error might be propagated by ourselves, as it was peculiarly our duty to prevent its being disseminated by others. - While we have endeavoured strictly to adhere to our former plan, we have had numerous complaints to encounter, and various excuses to offer. Excerpt from The Critical Review, or Annals of Literature, 1814, Vol. 6 The object of our venerable authoress, is confined to charitable institutions, in a moral point of reasoning. At the age of three score and ten, she has taken up her pen, with this view; that, if the vices of one human being can be restrained, or the real respectability, and actual useful ness of another, be promoted, she is then compensated for her earnest endeavour to make the attempt.' Excerpt from The Critical Review, or Annals of Literature, Vol. 19: January, 1810 When a writer has bestowed on one particular subject the whole of his tim'e and labour, for many years of his life, it always appears to imply some degree of arrogance and pre sumption in those who cannot possibly have examined the subject with the same degree of painful accuracy, to pretend to be his judges and censors. This, in the course of our duty as reviewers, we are often called upon to do; and the spirit of candour will generally attribute to our animadversions the 'motives which have suggested them, and the character which they are designed to support. For instance, a reviewer may be a good and sound mathematician; he certainly ought to be so before he pretends to notice a single treatise, however in considerable, on a mathematical subject. But if the works ofa great and experienced master in the science pass under his inspection, his ofiice is, generally speaking, reduced to that of laying before the public a plain and succinct view of the nature of the work, and of the points intended to be iproved. He is not, indeed, forbidden - his duty, on the con trary, enjoins him, to give his opinion as to any matter in which it appears to him that there is a deficiency of proof or an 'error of calculation or reasoning; for, such is human nature, that the greatest and wisest among us sometimes com mit errors which are liable to the detection of those who are greatly our inferiors in wisdom and understanding. But these objections, and these sentiments, are to be delivered, (in the case we a're supposing) not with the authority of a judge, but with the modesty of a patient inquirer, zealous to attain truth himself, and to communicate it to others. Excerpt from The Critical Review, or Annals of Literature, 1809, Vol. 17 The business of the poem is then introduced by half a do zen stanzas, in the imagery or sentiment of which it must he confessed that there is very little of novelty, and in which the attraction of some pleasing natural pictures: is (to us at least) ver much diminished by the strained inversions of words an sentences, aflizc'ted phraseology, and the no tin frequent recurrence of harsh and unmusical versifieation.
