The veteran, Sir William Russell - and I take it, no higher Crimean authority exists - most kindly undertook to write the opening chapter; and I cannot find words to express how deeply touched I have been by the interest he has taken in the book. The letters are those of a man who occupied a very responsible position, and who had ample opportunities of forming a correct judgment. Naturally, I do not wish to enter into any personal controversy with regard to my father's conduct either in the Crimea or in India.
