Excerpt from The Count of Monte Cristo, Vol. 4 I adopt the wisdom of the ancients, and feel my way, for my friendship for your family and my respect for you are as a twofold bandage over my eyes; well -" "Oh! speak, speak, Doctor; I shall have courage." "Well, sir, you have in your establishment, in your family perhaps, one of those frightful phenomena of which each century produces one example. Locusta and Agrippina, living at the same time, are an exception, which proves the determination of Providence to effect the entire ruin of the Roman empire, sullied by so many crimes. Brunehalt and Fre degonde are the results of the painful struggle of civilization in its infancy, when man was learning to control mind, were it even by an emissary from the realms of darkness. All these women had been, or were, beautiful. The same flower of innocence had flourished, or was still flourishing on their brows, that is seen on the brow of the culprit in your house." Villefort cried out, clasped his hands, and looked at the doctor with a supplicating air. But the latter pursued without pity. "'Seek whom the crime will profit, ' says an axiom of jurisprudence." "Doctor," cried Villcfort, "alas, Doctor! how often has man's justice been deceived by those fatal words! I know not why, but I feel that this crime -" "You acknowledge, then, the existence of the crime?" "Yes, I see too plainly that it docs exist. But I believe that it is aimed at me alone, and not at those who have perished. I apprehend an attack upon myself after all these strange disasters." "Oh, man!" murmured D'Avrigny, "the most egotistic of all animals, the most selfish of all creatures, who believes the earth turns, the sun shines, and death strikes for him alone, - an ant cursing God from the top of a blade of grass! Excerpt from The Count of Monte-Cristo, Vol. 3 of 4 The curtain rose as usual to an almost empty house, it being one of the absurdities of Parisian fashion never to appear at the Opera until after the performance has begun, so that the first act is generally played without the slight est attention being paid to it, that part of the audience already assembled being occupied in observing the new arrivals; while the noise of Opening and shutting doors, with the mingled buzz of many conversations, makes it impossible to hear anything else. Excerpt from The Count of Monte Cristo, Vol. 1 Onte cristo the most celebrated work of its celebrated author, not even excepting the d'artagnan romances has hitherto been known to the English-speaking world only through the medium of a very imperfect translation, which from time to time has been republished without any ma terial improvement. The great story is worthy to be presented in a better form. If readers have found it admirable in a crude presentation they will find new excellences in it as they follow, in an improved translation, the inimitable style of its author, ob serving his peculiar success in the employment of words fitted to his thought; his quiet humor, often so delicately conveyed that a careless rendering must lose it altogether; and, regarding the work as a whole, his artistic skill in proportion and per spective, which may easily be made of no effect by omissions in translating. In the present edition omissions have been sup plied; expansions have been rigorously reduced to the author's own crisp form of statement; erroneous. Excerpt from The Count of Monte-Cristo, Vol. 4 of 5 Inexpressibly deep, replied he; she looked so pale this morning, I scarcely knew her. These apparently simple words pierced Morrel to the heart. This man had then seen Valentine, and spoken to her! The young and high-spirited officer required all his strength of mind to resist breaking his oath. He took the arm of chateau-renaud, and turned toward the vault, where the attendants had already placed the two coffins. This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

This carefully crafted ebook: “The Count of Monte Cristo + The Three Musketeers + The Man in the Iron Mask (3 Unabridged Classics)” contains 3 unabridged classic books in one volume and is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas, first published in serial form from August 1844 until January 1846. The story takes place in France, Italy, islands in the Mediterranean, and in the Levant during the historical events of 1815–1838. It begins from just before the Hundred Days period and spans through to the reign of Louis-Philippe of France. The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book. It focuses on a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, escapes from jail, acquires a fortune and sets about getting revenge on those responsible for his imprisonment. However, his plans have devastating consequences for the innocent as well as the guilty. The Three Musketeers is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, first published in serial form in 1844. Set in the 17th century, it recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to travel to Paris, to join the Musketeers of the Guard. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos and Aramis, inseparable friends who live by the motto "all for one, one for all", a motto which is first put forth by d'Artagnan. The Man in the Iron Mask climactically concludes the epic adventures of the three Musketeers. The Man in the Iron Mask is a name given to a prisoner arrested as Eustache Dauger in 1669 or 1670, and held in a number of jails, including the Bastille and the Fortress of Pignerol. He was held in the custody of the same jailer, Bénigne Dauvergne de Saint-Mars, for a period of 34 years. The possible identity of this man has been thoroughly discussed and has been the subject of many books, because no one ever saw his face, which was hidden by a mask of black velvet cloth. Alexandre Dumas, père ( 1802 – 1870) was a French writer, best known for his numerous historical novels of high adventure which have made him the most widely read French author in the world. Prolific in several genres, Dumas began his career by writing plays, which were successfully produced from the first. He also wrote numerous magazine articles and travel books.

Excerpt from The Works of Alexandre Dumas, Vol. 2 of 30: The Count-of Monte Cristo The pretext of an opera engagement was so much the more feasible, as there chanced to be on that very night a more than ordinary attraction at the Academic Royale. Levasseur, who had been suffering under severe illness, made his reappearance in the character of Bertram, and, as usual, the announcement of the most admired production of the favorite composer of the day had attracted an audience consisting of the very elite of Parisian fashion. Morcerf, like most other young men of rank and fortune, had his orchestral stall, with the certainty of always finding a seat in at least a dozen of the principal boxes occupied by persons of his acquaintance; he had, moreover, his right of entry into the omnibus box. Chateau Renaud rented a stall beside his own, while Beauchamp, in his editorial capacity, had unlimited range all over the theater. It happened that on that particular night the minister's box was placed at the disposal of Lucien Debray, who offered it to the Count de Morcerf, who again, upon his mother's rejection of it, sent it to Danglars, with an intimation that he should probably do himself the honor of joining the baroness and her daughter during the evening, in the event of their accepting the box in question. The ladies received the offer with too much pleasure to dream of a refusal. To no class of persons is the presentation of a gratuitous opera-box more acceptable than to the wealthy millionaire, who still hugs economy while boasting of carrying a king's ransom in his waistcoat-pocket.
