The Rig Veda, the oldest book in the world and the sacred texts of the Hindu religion, reveals ninety-nine 30-year cycles during which Mars, in a geostationary orbit 35,000 km above Mt. Kailas, terra-formed the entire crust of the Earth while the first one-hundred generations of mankind looked on and composed their myths describing the events.

The ?igveda is the first book of humankind and the most sacred scripture of Hinduism. It also happens to be the most ill-understood book of our times. Despite the extensive study by academic and religious scholars, the purpose and meaning of the ?igveda and many ancient Hindu scriptures remain unclear. In this pathbreaking book, the discovery of the ?igveda as a book of ancient cosmology is described, and related to the seals of ancient Indus Valley Civilization, thereby challenging our perception of humanity."The Vedas have always been lauded as containing the secrets of cosmogenesis. Raja Roy in his remarkable book shows how this is true not only from the yogic vison but according to the latest insights of modern physics. The book takes the reader on a vast panoramic journey through the universe of matter, mind and human history as well."David Frawley (Vamadeva Shastri), Director, American Institute of Vedic Studies"Roy presents a new framework for the understanding of the Vedic hymns from the point of view of physics and then he draws parallels with recent theories on the nature of the universe. We celebrate the new path he has hewn through the bush of old scholarship."Professor Subhash Kak, Oklahoma State University

This volume is the first installment in a new series on the Rig Veda. This series is an original, idiosyncratic look at the Rg Veda and Vedas as a whole. The purpose of this series, The Secret History of the Vedas, is to unravel and discover the true meaning of the Vedic deities and to reveal the hidden meaning of the Vedas. This book is a line-by-line commentary on the Asyavamasya Sukta in the Rig Veda. There are three great themes in the Vedic dharma—Existence, Bliss, and Consciousness. This volume is an examination of Existence, the first prong in the Vedic Dharma. This book is a broad overview of the major themes that are present in the Vedic dharma. These themes will be explored and expanded in subsequent volumes in this series. That series is The Secret History of the Vedas. This series reveals the hidden meaning of the Rg Veda, reassembled from portions of the Vedas—the Rg Veda SamaVeda, Yajur Veda, and AtharvaVeda—as well as the Brahmanas, Upanishads, shastras, and other Vedic and Hindu writings. This series and this volume provide the key that unlocks the secrets of the Vedas.

In this book, the author seeks access to Karma's origins by following several clues suggested by the doctrine's earliest formulation in the Upanistexts (circa 600-500 B.C.) These clues lead back to the mythical and ritual structures firmly established in the Brahmana texts, texts concerned with the rituals that chronologically and conceptually precede the UpanisThe rise of the karma doctrine is tied to the increasing dominance in late Vedic thought of the cosmic man (Purusa/Prajapati) mythology and its ritual analogue the "building of the fire altar" (agnicayana).

Excerpt from The Cosmology of the Rigveda: An Essay The almost entire neglect of the chronological sequence of the hymns in this essay, which is a more serious omission, is the unavoidable consequence of the failure that has as yet attended every attempt to find a criterion by which to determine their relative dates. It is generally supposed that the occurrence of a hymn in the tenth book affords a suspicion of the lateness of its composition. Forms and meanings of words and grammatical constructions, which are of rare occurrence in the Rigveda, and become more frequent later, would also seem to indicate a late date for the hymns in which they occur; but it has not yet been found possible to establish any rules of general applicability on this score. Even if we were able to determine the dates of the hymns, we should still be very far from deciding the relative ages of the ideas contained in them. The cosmo logical guesses strung together in the other Vedic collections, and even in the Brahmanas, occasionally bear a more primitive character than those in the Rigveda, though the task of separating them from later accretions is encumbered with greater difficulty. The illustrations from' geology which are frequently introduced in this connection fail to apply in one important particular. The opinions held by a single man or a body of men are not lifeless as a fossil nor arranged in strata according to age; they are continually growing or dying, and 'shifting' their relative positions through interaction one on another; they derive' their vitality and force of meaning from association with the whole complex of thought in which they live. A chronological arrangement of the ideas could have no other basis than such general principles as may be abstracted from a comprehensive study of the mythology and ideology 'of all nations.
