Excerpt from The Convert IT is the prevailing disposition of the times to consider every thing which has been long established as not merely ca pable of amendment, but as absolutely requiring reform and in that unlimited toleration which it is the boast of this country to extend to all religious opi nions, it was not to be expected that the Established Church should altogether escape the influence of such a feeling. There are, indeed, many persons who openly avow their Opinion that she, in every way, stands in need of a great and A 3. Excerpt from The Convert: Or, Leaves From My Experience I have aimed to tell my story simply, and to keep as clear as possible of all abstruse metaphysical or theological discus sions; yet as I had in some parts the profoundest problems of human life to deal with, and as my own path to the Church led through the field of philosophy, I have not been able wholly to avoid them, and there are parts of the work which will have little interest for those who read only for amusement. I have aimed to write an instructive, not an amusing book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Loss and Gain: The Story of a Convert My Dear Dr. Russell, - Now that at length I take the step of printing my name in the Tile page of this Volume, I trust I shall not be encroaching on the kindness you have so long shown to me, if I venture to follow it up by placing yours in the page which comes next, thus associating myself with you, and recommending myself to my readers by the association. Excerpt from A Convert's Reason Why It has been said that no one was ever converted to Catholicity by books alone; nevertheless the compiler of this little work came as far as the portals of the Church with no human help other than that obtained from the printed page. When the quest for truth began, every Catholic doctrine and practice seemed a difficulty; but as light was thrown upon one question after another. The Convert is about the British Suffrage movement, which the author knew well. Part witty and scathing commentary on the upper classes, part political rhetoric quoted directly from open-air meetings, and part muck-raking realism, it moves back and forth between the personal and the political until the two can no longer be distinguished. The Convert uses as its frame the political "conversion" of Vida Levering, a beautiful, upper middle-class woman. We follow Vida's growing discontent with "country weekend" society and her increasing awareness of the common lot of women. Forthright and direct, Elizabeth Robins discusses issues that must have been shocking in 1907: unwed motherhood, the effects of the inequality of women, and the essential disrespect that underlies chivalry. Reminiscent of Jane Austen and foreshadowing the work of Virginia Woolf, The Convert is a fascinating novel. It provides us with a sense of history and a feeling of pride in what women could and did accomplish. It is also disturbing because far too many of the issues are still relevant.
