Excerpt from The Conversion of Europe The books dealing with missionary work outside the continent of Europe that have been published during the present generation are sufficient in number to fill a large library; but during this period not a single volume has appeared in England, America or Germany, which gives a detailed account of the work done by the missionaries who first preached the Christian faith in the various countries of Europe. In view of this fact, no apology is needed for the publication of a book which attempts to cover this long-neglected ground. In collecting materials for the present volume I have tried to go back in every case to the earliest existing authorities, and in the footnotes and the bibliography provided I have indicated whence the information given in the text has been obtained. I have not found it possible to arrange the chapters in a completely satisfactory chronological order. The missionary work in Europe began in the Balkan Peninsula and in Italy; but, as the whole of these countries did not become nominally Christian until Ireland and a large part of Great Britain had been evangelized, it seemed best to place the countries in the order in which Christianity became generally established as the religion of its peoples. Excerpt from Conversion of the West: The English The wave of migration which flung the Celt upon the European Continent, was succeeded by a second wave, which bore other tribes from the same Aryan homes to the frontiers of the Roman Empire. The masters of the world chose to call these new comers, as they called the Greeks, by a name which was not their own. This name for them was Germans. Amongst themselves, on the other hand, they were Diutisc, Thiudisco, Deutscher, or, in its Latin form, Teutons. Into the greater part of their country the Romans never penetrated after the times of Drusus and Germanicus. They regarded them as barbarians, but admired the austerity and purity of their manners, the honour they paid their women, their spirit of independence, and warlike energy. Excerpt from Translations and Reprints, Vol. 2: From the Original Sources of European History An English city or borough,1 in the early Middle Ages, is to be looked upon, in the greater number of cases, simply as a manor or group of adjacent manors, where facilities for trade or handicraft have led to a larger and more concentrated population than could have subsisted merely on the agriculture of the rural commun ity. In each of these towns local customs grew up, just as the custom of the manor existed in each village in the Open country but more highly developed, as a consequence of the closer population, mercantile occupation, and more active life of the townspeople. Excerpt from The History of the Reformation in Europe: With a Chronology of the Reformation Every one who is acquainted with the uninspired productions of even the early christian writers, is compelled to admit the marked difference between them and the books of the New Testament; a difference, not merely arising from the fact that inspiration had ceased, and with it the divine style peculiar to those "holy men of God" who spake and wrote "as they were moved by the Holy Ghost;" but indicating the adoption of sentiments and practices for which no authority is found in the word of the Lord. The apostle Paul prophesied of these times. He foresaw the flood of corruption, and forewarned the church of its approach: see 2 Thess. 2; 1 Tim. 4:1-3; 2 Tim. 3:1-5. His words were verified.
