Edited by Robert Gonzales Jr. A growing number of Baptist churches today are rediscovering their confessional heritage. The contributors to this book welcome this rediscovery. Indeed, they hope it continues! With that end in view, they have written and compiled these essays to celebrate and commend the use of creeds and confessions in Baptist faith and life. The primary audiences they have in view are local church leaders and members because sound theology is not just the province of the academy but is essential to the health and ministry of the local church. Contributors: Nicolas Alford, Thomas K. Ascol, Brian Borgman, Vadim Chepurny, Robert Gonzales Jr., Michael A.G. Haykin, Jeffrey D. Johnson, Thomas J. Nettles, Samuel E. Waldron, Luke Walker, Steve Weaver

Here in modern English is the most famous of Baptist Confessions containing the heart and soul of the Reformation in terms of clear Biblical truth. Here is a Confession of faith for churches to be founded upon, a faith for church members to know, love, defend and propagate, a faith that church officers can hand on to future generations. The Introduction which forms a preface to this Confession explains its origin and discusses several particularly relevant issues contained in the chapters, thereby increasing the usefulness of the whole.

The truths that this confession promoted fell out of favor for much of the twentieth century, but in the last fifty years there has been a great recovery of gospel truth among Evangelicals and once again there are those deeply committed to the doctrines of this confession. The English language, however, has changed over time, and just as there are phrases in the Authorized Version (1611), also known as the King James Version, that are no longer as clear as they once were due to linguistic change, so it is the case with the 1689 Confession. For this reason, this new rendition of the confession by Dr. Reeves is indeed welcome. He has sought to render it readable by the typical twenty-first-century Christian reader, but with minimal change and without sacrificing any of the riches of the original text. I believe he has succeeded admirably in both of these aims. (From the Foreword by Michael A.G. Haykin)

Fourteen Presbyterian scholars enter into conversations with the confessions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and examine the major theological themes that make the confessions such foundational commitments of faith. This collection of insightful essays provides readers with a clear understanding of the confessions from different periods of the church's life. These conversations with the confessions found in the PC(USA)'s Book of Confessions include some illuminating commentary on why they were written and demonstrate how they can be used to address major theological issues. This important work will help scholars, pastors, and church leaders interested in studying the Reformed tradition appreciate the role of the confessions in shaping Christian life and faith today.
