Excerpt from The Citadel of Thought The beautiful town of Le Claire, sheltered by the hills and washed by the waves of the Mississippi river was my birthplace. The yard surrounding our home was made a restful retreat by choice fruit trees, Shrubbery and flowers of my mother's planting. Walking alone in this garden of beauty, watching the unfolding fruit and flowers, or sitting on the steps leading from the garden wall to the river, watching the fleeting clouds or bright stars reflected from the water; I would talk to my Creator and then I would talk to the trees, flowers and river; I would say, Some day I will write a book and tell the beautiful thoughts whispered to me. Every breeze that sighed thru the trees or every wave that kissed the rocky shore was a voice speaking to me. Every sunbeam playing in the orchard or every silvery tread of a moonbeam was melody to me, and my heart was filled with gladness and joy as I walked alone dreaming and hopeful of that some day when I might write a book. Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. A breathtaking novel of secrets, lies, and survival in post-World War II Germany, where alliances may not be what they seem. August 1945. As Stefano, an Italian POW, heads toward home across war-ravaged Germany, he encounters a young child beside his dead mother. Unable to leave him to an unknown fate, Stefano takes the boy with him, finding refuge in a seemingly abandoned house in a secluded woodland. But the house is far from vacant. Stefano wakes at the arrival of its owner, Erich, a former German soldier, who invites the travelers to stay until they can find safe passage home. Stefano cautiously agrees, intrigued by the disarming German, his reclusive neighbor Rosalind, and her traumatized husband, Georg. Stefano is also drawn to Monique, the girl in a photograph on Rosalind's wall, who went missing during the war. But when he discovers letters written by Monique, a darker truth emerges. This place of refuge could be one of reckoning, and the secrets of the past might prevent the travelers from ever getting home.
