Excerpt from The Church History of Scotland From the Commencement of the Christian Era to the Present Time, Vol. 2 of 2 While these things were doing in London, the Covenanters in Scotland had made up their mind that the mere discontinu ance of the Book of Canons, and Liturgy, and the abolition of the High Commission, would not satisfy them that they must have a General Assembly and a parliament to give the stamp of legal authority to their worship and discipline. They were determined to place no dependence upon the absolute will of a monarch who had shown that all his predilections were against them.2 Their appeal was from the king to the law. Some of them went farther, and already began to reduce to practice their own favourite notions of ecclesiastical govern 1nent.some presbyteries relieved their perpetual moderators of their duties some removed uncovenanted clergymen from their parishes some ordained ministers by the laying on of the hands of the presbytery apart from the bishop. The lower orders of the people went farther, and in several cases mobbed and maltreated unhappy divines who still clung to Episcopacy and refused to take the Covenant. In all these rabbles, singular enough, the women were conspicuous in some cases even ladies of rank were unable to restrain their zeal, which furnishes Clarendon with the taunt, that the Jews, as of old, stirred up the devout and honourable women. 3. Excerpt from History of the Scottish Church, Vol. 2 The author has much reason to be gratified with the criticisms of the press on the first volume of his history. His statement in the preface that he did not profess to be colourless in his opinions, was interpreted by some critics as an admission that he had written in the spirit and with the design of a partisan. He submits that the words were susceptible of a different interpretation. The writer of Church history, who is aware of his own bias in things ecclesiastical, is the more likely to be on his guard against it, and to steer an even course between divergent lines of historical representation. This has been his honest endeavour in the second volume as in the first. But as the modern period, now brought under review, bristles with controversial matter over which historians have disputed from the Reformation downwards, he has no very sanguine expectation that his treatment of it will escape the charge of partisanship from extreme men of any school. To succeed in satisfying such as are themselves partisans would assuredly be the clearest proof of partisanship. The author desires to express his obligations to the Rev. Excerpt from The History of the Church of Scotland, Vol. 2: From the Reformation to the Present Time But the chiefs of the Covenanters had now gone too far to recede, or even to remain inactive. They therefore spread abroad a false and malicious report, that the king intended to invade the kingdom with English troops: upon this ground they summoned a meeting, or convention, ofthe noblemen and commissioners of burghs, to meet at lldinburgh on the 20th of February. At this convention a paper was read, which had been drawn up by Balmerino, llope (the king's advocate), and Henderson (moderator of the late Assembly), recommending an appeal to arms, and using such arguments for itsjustification as tended to inflame the passions and prejudices of the meeting. The reasons adduced were declared to be so convincing, to men whose minds were previously made up, that instantly all of them, with one voice, consented to the listing ofan army, and voted general Leslie to be the commander thereof. The reasons hich had been submitted to the convention, and had been found so convincing to tlieui, were immediately published and dispersed to all parts of the kingdom, and the convention ordained, that every minister should read this treasonable do cument from their pulpits, and frame their discourses so as to procure an universal consent amongst their parishioners.
