Excerpt from The Chronicles of America Series, Vol. 37 This volume is not intended to be a complete record of inventive genius and mechanical progress in the United States. A bare catalogue of notable American inventions in the nineteenth century alone could not be compressed into these pages. Nor is it any part of the purpose of this book to trespass on the ground of the many mechanical works and encyclopedias which give technical descriptions and explain in detail the principle of every invention. All this book seeks to do is to outline the personalities of some of the outstanding American inventors and indicate the significance of their achievements. Excerpt from The Chronicles of America Series, Vol. 42: Extra-Illustrated Edition The South of today is not the South of 1860 or even of 1865. There is a New South, though not perhaps in the sense usually understood, for no ex pression has been more often misused in super ficial discussion. Men have written as if the phrase indicated a new land and a new civilization, utterly unlike anything that had existed before and involv ing a sharp break with the history and the tradi tions of the past. Nothing could be more untrue. Peeples do not in one generation or in two rid themselves entirely of characteristics which have been developing for centuries. Excerpt from The Chronicles of America Series, Vol. 34 Some such unconscious selection as this has been at work in the classification of our representa tive men. The building of the nation and the liter ary expression of its purpose and ideals are tasks which have called forth the strength of a great variety of individuals. Some of these men have proved to be peculiarly fitted for a specific service, irrespective of the question of their general intel lectual powers, or their rank as judged by the standard of European performance in the same field. Thus the battle of New Orleans, in Euro pean eyes a mere bit of frontier fighting, made Andrew Jackson a hero as indubitably as if he had defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. It gave him the Presidency. Excerpt from The Chronicles of America Series, Vol. 12 The author is aware of a certain audacity in under taking, himself a Briton, to appear in a company of American writers on American history and above all to write on the subject of Washington. If ex cuse is needed it is to be found in the special in terest of the career of Washington to a citizen of the British Commonwealth of Nations at the pres ent time and in the urgency with which the editor and publishers declared that such an interpretation would not be unwelcome to Americans and pressed upon the author a task for which he doubted his own qualifications. To the editor he owes thanks for wise criticism. He is also indebted to Mr. Worthington Chauncey Ford, of the Massachu setts Historical Society, a great authority on Washington, who has kindly read the proofs and given helpful comments. Needless to say the au thor alone is responsible for opinions in the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Chronicles of America Series, Vol. 38 Yet the enthusiasts for railroads could not be discouraged, and presently the whole population divided into two camps, the friends of the canal, and the friends of the iron highway. N ewspapers acrimoniously championed either side; the ques tion was a favorite topic with debating societies; public meetings and conventions were held to up hold one method of transportation and to decry the other. The canal, it was urged, was not an experi ment; it had been tested and not found wanting; already the great achievement of De Witt Clinton in completing the Erie Canal had made New York City the metropolis of the western world. The rail road, it was asserted, was just as emphatically an experiment; no one could tell Whether it could ever succeed; why, therefore, pour money and effort into this new form of transportation when the other was a demonstrated success? Excerpt from The Chronicles of America Series, Vol. 27 But before the cotton-planters overran the coun try during the two decades preceding the begin ning of this story, this area was Virgin country and, with the exception of certain prairie districts, was covered with dense forests, while its river-bottoms were still tangled, impenetrable swamps. And even as late as 1860 the clearing of new lands was a large part of the planter's work. This was done by cutting away the brambles and dense undergrowth and then deadening the larger trees by a process of belting or taking away the bark near the ground and thus preventing further growth. This clearing of the forests let the sunlight fall upon the soil and enabled the planter to produce his first crop at a minimum of expense. But the tall, dead trees, from which the winds tore off branches and strewed them over the ground, gave the country side a somber, despoiled appearance, and seemed the skeletons of the monarchs of the forest cry ing aloud against the desecration of nature and the sheer waste of the finest timber in the world.
