Excerpt from The World Problem Capital, Labor, and the Church The social message of the Catholic Church is of interest to all mankind. She alone succeeded in solving the greatest of social problems in the past, and her lessons are of equal importance in the present time. Hence it is to all alike that this book is addressed. In its plain exposition of Catholic morality and its application of historic facts there is no animosity or ill will towards any person, whether capitalist or laborer, Catholic or Protestant, Jew or unbeliever, but a burning desire to be of service to all. Though issued in time of war and serving as a preparation for the return of peace, the book is not restricted in its purpose to any particular period. It deals with the fundamental problems of modern life and with the unchanging principles of social justice and Christian charity as studied from the Catholic point of View. It is a work, therefore, equally necessary in all seasons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Labor Question in Its Economic and Christian Aspects Hence it is one of those natural laws, which it is not in the power of-man, or combinations of men, to alter or abrogate, that labor is absolutely dependent on capital, in some amount at least, for its very possibility'and sustentation and in still larger and ever increasing ratios for its success and rewards. Capital is the natural ally, support, and coadjutor of labor. It can notbe otherw1se, except in distempered misconceptions, or through some strange and monstrous mal-adjustment. Excerpt from The Meaning of Christian Unity A time when half the Christian world is in discord that threatens destruction is a good time to search earnestly for the foundations of concord. Other foundation can no man lay than that Which is laid, Which is Jesus Christ. I purpose to ask, and to try to answer, two questions about Christian Unity; what, and how. The method of the book is not that of formal logic, but that of induction, Which gathers the facts as it proceeds. The results, in briefest compass, are given here at the out set, and the reader Who takes no interest in such a treatment may have the satisfaction of laying down the book With the preface. Christian unity is the life of God in the lives of all his children. The way to attain it is by the diligent use of the means of grace. Excerpt from Christian Unity Christ, the Redeemer of mankind, came to realize this story of the heathen, this dreaming of poet and philosopher. He Showed how, through the acceptance of His Gospel, the unity of the race could be secured. He taught the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man. No more discord or separation among children of a common Father who art in Heaven one heart here, one everlasting home beyond. And riven as is the mystical Body of Christ, each member is instinct with this common life; each yearns to find the others, and cannot rest till bone shall come to bone, and flesh to flesh, and the beauti ful Spouse of. Christ Shall be fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. mile Durkheim is often referred to as the father of sociology. Along with Karl Marx and Max Weber he was a principal architect of modern social science and whose contribution helped established it as an academic discipline. "The Division of Labor in Society," published in 1893, was his first major contribution to the field and arguably one his most important. In this work Durkheim discusses the construction of social order in modern societies, which he argues arises out of two essential forms of solidarity, mechanical and organic. Durkheim further examines how this social order has changed over time from more primitive societies to advanced industrial ones. Unlike Marx, Durkheim does not argue that class conflict is inherent to the modern Capitalistic society. The division of labor is an essential component to the practice of the modern capitalistic system due to the increased economic efficiency that can arise out of specialization; however Durkheim acknowledges that increased specialization does not serve all interests equally well. This important and foundational work is a must read for all students of sociology and economic philosophy.
