Excerpt from The Christian Examiner and General Review, 1835, Vol. 17 Animated' by such feelings, we may now regard Paul, in what must have been one of the most interesting moments of even his eventful life, preparing himself on the hill of Mars to address an auditory of Athenians on behalf of Christianity. He would feel the imposing associations of the spot on which he stood, where justice had been administered in its most awful form, by characters the most venerable, in the darkness of night, under the canopy of heaven, with the solemnities of religion, and with an authority, which legal institution and public opinion had assimilated rather with the decrees of conscience and of the gods, than with the ordinary power of human tribunals. He wodld look around on many an immor tal trophy of architect and sculptor, where genius had triumph cd, but triumphed only in the cause of that idolatry to which they were dedicated, and for which they existed. And beyond the city, clinging round its temples, like its inhabitants to their enshrined idols, would open on his view that lovely coun try, and the sublime ocean, and the serene h'eavens bending over them, and bearing that testimony to the universal Creator. Excerpt from The Christian Examiner, Vol. 11 of 29: And General Review I propose to address you, at this time, Fathers and Breth ren in the Christian Ministry, upon the subject of the Christ ian Miracles particularly in their character of an evidence of Christianity as a revelation from God. The present aspect of Theology amongst us 1 must be my apology for the adoption of a subject which might otherwise be deemed but ill suited to the occasion of a Pastoral Conference. By miracles, I understand something more than the deriva tion Of the term implies, that is, more than simply wonder ful works, namely, such wonderful works as have been com mouly supposed, by believers in Christianity, to be wrought by the special aid and interposition of God. It is to this class of wonderful works, if I mistake not, that the application of the term miracles is generally restricted. By the Christian mira cles, I understand those, and only those, of which we find the record in the New Testament.
