Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God The work that was entrusted to me by the General Editors of the International Theological Library was simply the presentation of the conception of God that is characteristic of the Christian religion. I was not sent to search for God, but rather to report as well as I might what the Christian faith testifies concerning him. It has seemed to me that this single commission was enough for me to undertake, and I have attempted nothing more. No report of the literature of the subject will be found upon these pages, nor any quotation of other men's work, nor any controversy. It is the sole endeavour of the book to set forth the Christian doctrine of God for the present day: not the doctrine of the past, or of the future, but the thought of God that we may now entertain if we follow the leading of Jesus Christ the revealer. So far as I have the power, I have sought to be faithful both to the ancient light to the modern, and I have hoped that my presentation might bear reasonably well the tests of the present time. There are many ways of dealing with the vast and glorious theme, and certainly there must be room for a book that simply aims to show forth doctrine as Christian faith may receive it now. I have written in the full conviction that the light which Jesus Christ gives us upon God is the true light, and that God is such a Being as he inspires us to love and trust. There is always some kind Of strain or tension between man and his environment, and man has always an interest in overcoming the strain, in re solving the discord in his situation into a harmony, in getting the environment to be his ally rather than his adversary. The process by which his end is attained may be described 'as one of reconciliation, but whether the reconciliation is adequate depends on whether his conception Of the environ ment is equal to the truth. Men may be very dimly and imperfectly conscious of the nature Of the strain which dis quiets their life, and may seek to Overcome it in blind and insufficient ways. They may interpret it as physical in its origin when it is really ethical, or as the misapprehension of a moral order when it is really antagonism to a personal God, and in either case the reconciliation they seek will fail to give the peace of which they are in quest. The theme has been regarded and treated primarily as a subject of investigation. I have accordingly approached it from the historical side, and have aimed to state the problems to be considered and to define my positions respecting them in an historical and inductive method. I have tried to judge the various Opinions reviewed and to test my own by means of the fundamental Christian concepts of God and of man. The treatment has been made as objective as possible. It has been my aim to describe and estimate conflicting theories with fairness. My own judgments, with the reasons for them, have been frankly given. In order to make what is the central doctrine of Christianity intelligible as such, I have been compelled to give an almost complete outline of Systematic Theology, the remaining parts of which could easily be supplied. No one who has given any attention to Vol. II. Will be surprised at the fulness of the exposition. I need not, it seems to me, make any statement in advance regarding what has been my aim in the positive explication of the doctrine.
