The papers collected in this volume congeal around a debate about the ways and extent of the dominance of linear time and progressive history and the concomitant delineation of the nation in Chinese and Japanese historiography. As China and Japan entered the global capitalist system of nation states, the Chinese and Japanese regimes implemented a number of reforms, which resulted in transformations that affected everyday experience. In the face of imperialism and the perceived threat of being split up, the Meiji and late Qing governments radically reoriented policies in order to become wealthy and powerful in the global arena. People not only began to experience time and space in new ways, but elites also were increasingly exposed to Western theories of history and concepts of nationhood, which became dominant. These changes contributed to the production of new types of historical consciousness and collective identity. The essays in this volume each provide a perspective on the complex ways in which imagining national and regional identity in East Asia were and continue to be enmeshed with visions of time and history. This book should be of interest to all those who are interested in nationalism, modernity in China and Japan, global capitalism and the politics of time.

This thesis aims for the development of efficient algorithms to exactly solve four selected NP-hard graph and hypergraph problems arising in the fields of scheduling, steel manufactoring, software engineering, radio frequency allocation, computer-aided circuit design, and social network analysis. NP-hard problems presumably cannot be solved exactly in a running time growing only polynomially with the input size. In order to still solve the considered problems efficiently, this thesis develops linear-time data reduction and fixed-parameter linear-time algorithms—algorithms that can be proven to run in linear time if certain parameters of the problem instances are constant. Besides proving linear worst-case running times, the efficiency of most of the developed algorithms is evaluated experimentally. Moreover, the limits of fixed-parameter linear-time algorithms and provably efficient and effective data reduction are shown.

A new and practical approach to understanding system theory The modern development of engineering and science requires a deep understanding of the basic concepts of system theory. Approaching the subject from a system, rather than an application-oriented perspective, world-renowned system expert Martin Schetzen provides practicing engineers and scientists, as well as students, with a solid, clearly explained foundation in the fundamentals of linear time-invariant (continuous) system theory. Developing linear systems from a functional viewpoint, the book is noteworthy for its presentation of: The time-domain theory of continuous time linear time-invariant (LTI) systems System transfer function, gain, and phase-shift An original development of the Fourier transform, the unilateral and bilateral Laplace transforms, and their inverses from a system theory viewpoint Basic filter analysis and design techniques from the s-plane viewpoint Feedback systems and their stability, interconnected systems, and block diagram reduction The state-variable approach to system analysis and its advantages for certain problems Taking an original, highly useful approach to system theory, Linear Time-Invariant Systems lays a solid foundation for further study of system modeling, control theory, filter theory, discrete system theory, state-variable theory, and other subjects requiring a system viewpoint. An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available upon request from the Wiley Makerting Department.

This book is based on columns and tutorials published in the Bulletin of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS) during the period 2000-2003. It presents many of the most active current research lines in theoretical computer science. The material appears in two volumes, “Algorithms and Complexity” and “Formal Models and Semantics”, reflecting the traditional division of the field. The list of contributors includes many of the well-known researchers in theoretical computer science. Most of the articles are reader-friendly and do not presuppose much knowledge of the area in question. Therefore, the book constitutes very suitable supplementary reading material for various courses and seminars in computer science.

The aim of this book is to propose a new approach to analysis and control of linear time-varying systems. These systems are defined in an intrinsic way, i.e., not by a particular representation (e.g., a transfer matrix or a state-space form) but as they are actually. The system equations, derived, e.g., from the laws of physics, are gathered to form an intrinsic mathematical object, namely a finitely presented module over a ring of operators. This is strongly connected with the engineering point of view, according to which a system is not a specific set of equations but an object of the material world which can be described by equivalent sets of equations. This viewpoint makes it possible to formulate and solve efficiently several key problems of the theory of control in the case of linear time-varying systems. The solutions are based on algebraic analysis. This book, written for engineers, is also useful for mathematicians since it shows how algebraic analysis can be applied to solve engineering problems. Henri Bourlès is a Professor and holds the industrial automation chair at the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers in France. He has been teaching automation for over 20 years in engineering and graduate schools. Bogdan Marinescu is currently research engineer at the French Transmission System Operator (RTE) and Associate Professor at SATIE-Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan.

The present volume contains the proceedings of Logic at Botik '89, a symposium on logical foundations of computer science organized by the Program Systems Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences and held at Pereslavl-Zalessky, USSR, July 3-8, 1989. The scope of the symposium was very broad; the topics of interest were: complexity of formal systems, constructive mathematics in computer science, denotational and operational semantics of programs, descriptive complexity, dynamic and algorithmic logics and schematology, formal tools to describe concurrent computations, lambda calculus and related topics, foundations of logic programming, logical foundations of database theory, logics for knowledge representation, modal and temporal logics, type theory in programming, and verification of programs. Thus, the papers in this volume represent many interesting trends in logical foundations of Computer Science, ranging from purely theoretical research to practical applications of theory.

The 35th International Workshop on Graph-Theoretic Concepts in Computer Science (WG 2009) took place at Montpellier (France), June 24–26 2009. About 80 computer scientists from all over the world (Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, UK, USA) attended the conference. Since1975,ithastakenplace20timesinGermany,fourtimesinTheNeth- lands, twice in Austria, as well as once in Italy, Slovakia, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, France, Norway, and the UK. The conference aims at uniting theory and practice by demonstrating how graph-theoretic concepts can be applied to various areas in computer science, or by extracting new problems from appli- tions. The goal is to present recent research results and to identify and explore directions of future research. The conference is well-balanced with respect to established researchers and young scientists. There were 69 submissions. Each submission was reviewed by at least three, and on average four, Program Committee members. The Committee decided to accept 28 papers. Due to the competition and the limited schedule, some good papers could not be accepted.
