An archeologist unearths an ancient manuscript, buried in the ruins of the Galilean town of Capernaum. It turns out to have been written by the Roman officer (the centurion of the title) whose servant Jesus had healed. The centurion, upon retirement and fascinated by Jesus's apparent power, researches all he can learn about the itinerant Jewish preacher. He interviews all who knew him and collects their writings, eventually composing the now rediscovered manuscript. Upon the centurion's death, his son buries the work in a sealed container to protect it from the rampaging Roman soldiers, who have just razed Jerusalem and destroyed the temple in 70 CE. There the manuscript lies until found by one Noah Leipzig, PhD, circa 196aEUR".

**Revised 2012 Edition**In the year 28 A.D. the people of Frisia, a previously loyal province, were suffering under the oppression of the Roman magistrate, a former Centurion named Olennius. So blinded by greed had he become, that he taxed the populous well beyond their means to produce. Now impoverished and risking starvation, the Frisians did the unspeakable and sought open rebellion as their only means of survival. The Emperor Tiberius, now living in self-imposed isolation on the isle of Capri, is deeply troubled upon hearing that such a staunchly loyal province would seek to throw off the rule of Rome. Nevertheless, he orders the mobilization of the Army of the Rhine to suppress the Frisians back into docile submission, never knowing the real reason as to the origin of the rebellion. As the Twentieth Legion marches north into Frisia on its first major campaign in eight years, Centurion Artorius finds himself facing his first major battle since taking over his Century. Years of relative peace, combined with the mass discharges of many of his veteran soldiers, have left the ranks filled with a number of young and inexperienced legionaries. For over a third of his men this will be their first action. The Frisians, in their desperation, know that they face death either by starvation in peace or slaughter on the battlefield. For Artorius and his legionaries the crucible of war will end in heartbreak; for only after the devastation of battle does the truth arise.

Duty. Honor. Tyranny. Love. Ever since Lucius read of the heroic exploits of Caesar, he dreamed of the glory of Rome and of securing his own great name. But his first station as a centurion is in the backwaters of Jerusalem. Haunted by the crucifixion of Jesus, yet eager to learn more of this supposed King, he seeks out His followers, soon becoming enthralled with one Mary Magdalene. But before his curiosity is quenched and any romance catches fire, he is summoned to lead conquests against the barbarians of Gaul. There the hardships of battle, year after year, wear down a heart that was just beginning to come alive. Mary continues to journey toward God, while Lucius drifts further and further away. Decades later, life-worn and weary, their paths cross again during the Christian persecutions in northern Italy, and they must choose to serve either love or duty. In the days of the Roman Empire, Animuss family was not landowners, but part of the land with the forests and fields. Animus has never been away from home. But when the land can no longer support his family, he travels to Tarsus to join Pompeys navy and fights in the war against Cilician pirates threatening grain shipments and other goods destined for Rome. After Animus sets into motion events that ultimately transform him into a landowner and lift his family from poverty, his son, Cyrus, attends the University of Tarsus, marries well, and provides an environment that further prepares his own son, Cornelius, for his destiny. When Cornelius joins the Roman legion and becomes First Centurion of the Tenth Legion under Pontius Pilate, he befriends Jesus. The intertwining paths of these two men bring them together for a final encounter when Cornelius requests that Pilate put him in command of the crucifixion party. The Centurion: A Tale of the Crucifixion traces three generations in an adventurous, thought-provoking story as a Roman soldier sets out on a journey of self-discovery to meet his destiny.
