We have proved existence and obtained estimates for the (finite) Hausdorff and fractal dimensions of global (maximal compact) attractors for the Landau-Lifschitz equations. These are the fundamental equations of the classical theory ferromagnetism. In order to obtain more detailed information about these attractors, we are currently developing approximation methods based on the theory of inertial manifolds. Inertial manifolds are finite dimensional manifolds which attract all solutions at an exponential rate. They contain the global attractor and have the advantage that they are manifolds whereas the attractors generally are not (they can be complicated fractal sets). The equations reduce to a finite-dimensional system of O.D.E.'s on the inertial manifolds. There is a class of calculational methods that have been developed in recent years, called nonlinear or modified Galerkin methods, which are closely related to the concept of inertial manifold and which are especially useful for the long-time integration of nonlinear differential equations. In the usual Galerkin approach, solutions of the nonlinear equation are sought in linear manifolds PuH which are spanned by the eigenfunctions of a linear operator which occurs in the problem. In the case of the Landau-Lifschitz equations, this is the Laplacian.

In this book, some of the principal investigators of the phenomena have reviewed their successes. The contributions include an overview of the field by H Suhl, followed by a detailed review of the high-power response of magnetic materials. Following that chapter, a number of authors review the phenomena for a variety of magnetic materials and pumping configurations.In the final chapter, evidence of another nonlinear effect is reviewed. Using a pulsed driving field, it is possible to excite a travelling spin wave. The nonlinear contributions will give rise to a ?bunching? effect which compensates for the dispersive effects to produce a shape-preserving traveling wave pulse known as solitons.Ordered magnetic materials have provided a rich source for the investigation of nonlinear phenomena. These investigations have contributed much to our knowledge of the behavior of chaotic systems, as well as to a better understanding of the high-power response of the magnetic materials themselves.

For several years, core level spectroscopies and other, c\osely related, electron spectroscopies have provided very useful information about the atomic composition, the geometric structure, and the electronic structure of condensed matter. Recently, these spectroscopies have also been used for the study of magnetic properties; such studies have a great potential to extend our knowledge and understanding of magnetic systems. This volume collects the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Core Level Spectroscopies for Magnetic Phenomena: Theory and Experiment" held at the Ettore Majorana Centre, Erice, Sicily, on 15 to 26 May 1994. The topics considered at the ASI covered a wide range of subjects involving the use of core-level and related spectroscopies to study magnetic phenomena. There are a large and growing number of applications of these spectroscopies to the study of magnetic materials; an important objective of the ASI was to stimulate further growth. The topics covered at the ASI can be placed into three general groups: 1) fundamental principles of core level spectroscopies; 2) basic aspects of magnetic phenomena; and, 3) the combination of the two previous topics embodied in applications of the spectroscopies to magnetism. In all three groups, theoretical interpretations as weH as experimental measurements were presented, often both of these aspects were covered in a single lecture or series oflectures. The theoretical treatments ofthe spectroscopies as weH as of the magnetic phenomena help to establish a framework for understanding many of the experimental measurements on magnetic materials.

This volume on Ultrafast Magnetism is a collection of articles presented at the international “Ultrafast Magnetization Conference” held at the Congress Center in Strasbourg, France, from October 28th to November 1st, 2013. This first conference, which is intended to be held every two years, received a wonderful attendance and gathered scientists from 27 countries in the field of Femtomagnetism, encompassing many theoretical and experimental research subjects related to the spins dynamics in bulk or nanostructured materials. The participants appreciated this unique opportunity for discussing new ideas and debating on various physical interpretations of the reported phenomena. The format of a single session with many oral contributions as well as extensive time for poster presentations allowed researchers to have a detailed overview of the field. Importantly, one could sense that, in addition to studying fundamental magnetic phenomena, ultrafast magnetism has entered in a phase where applied physics and engineering are playing an important role. Several devices are being proposed with exciting R&D perspectives in the near future, in particular for magnetic recording, time resolved magnetic imaging and spin polarized transport, therefore establishing connections between various aspects of modern magnetism. Simultaneously, the diversity of techniques and experimental configurations has flourished during the past years, employing in particular Xrays, visible, infra-red and terahertz radiations. It was also obvious that an important effort is being made for tracking the dynamics of spins and magnetic domains at the nanometer scale, opening the pathway to exciting future developments. The concerted efforts between theoretical and experimental approaches for explaining the dynamical behaviors of angular momentum and energy levels, on different classes of magnetic materials, are worth pointing out. Finally it was unanimously recognized that the quality of the scientific oral and poster presentations contributed to bring the conference to a very high international standard.
