Excerpt from The Carolina Engineer, Vol. 2: The Professional Journal of the School of Engineering, University of North Carolina; November, 1933 Since the time Of the first civilized man, salt has been a substance necessary for the welfare of the human race. Man has used salt for many purposes, until comparatively lately using it main ly as a seasoning for food, but more recently also as a product from which to derive important chemicals. This paper deals with the salt industry as it exists at the present time in the United States. In different sections of the country the method of treating the salt is radically different from that in other sections; this being due largely to the fact that climatic conditions, purity Of the raw material, water supply and many other factors vary in the different sections. Specific plants which use the different processes will be used as examples to explain the different methods Of treatment.
