Excerpt from The Canadian Veterinary Record, Vol. 4: September-December, 1923 There is no surer indication of the mental calibre of a man than the books he reads, or does not read. A shelf of well used books indicates the thinker, the man who, not content with having disposed of a problem, must satisfy himself regarding the methods used, results obtained, and possible sequelae. Those engaged in teaching and research work must read to keep up with their subject, and to them little credit is due for doing what is an absolute necessity, but the isolated man who keeps abreast of the times, trying new ideas and translating new thoughts into action, is deserving of praise. He is a man proud of his profession and knowl edge and of whom the profession may be proud. Books and journals often represent the sacrifice of something else and consequently their purchase is frequently indefinitely postponed. Even a book a year added after graduation will grow into a valuable collection, and once the habit is formed the original one a year is soon exceeded. Excerpt from The Canadian Veterinary Record, Vol. 4: Published for the Profession in the Interest of Veterinary Science; March-May, 1923 It is regretable to notice that there Is a tendency for our Provincial Associations to assume an indifferent attitude when discussing Domin ion Registration at annual conventions. There is no doubt that the busy practitioners living in widely separated parts of the country are debarred from taking an active interest in matters of this nature. There is also the handicap of the heavy expense incurred in attending meetings. Then on the other hand it is usual to find extensive pro grammes arranged at Association meetings which crowd the real busi ness into second place. The Record ventures to express an Opinion regarding this impor tant question, to the effect that Executive Councils of Veterinary Associations should do something to stimulate thought and expression on this all-important subject. It was considered when the Hon. Dr. Tolmie obtained sanction from the Government to call a Veterinary Conference at Ottawa in November 1921, that the prospects for unanimity Of sentiment seemed most encouraging. The Veterinarians who attended the Conference were representatives of their respective Associations, delegated to consider some scheme which would even tually evolve a Canadian National Veterinary Association with Do minion Registration. From these delegates a select Committee was chosen to draft a suitable Bill with the approval of the Government at that time. Copies of this proposed Bill were sent to all Veterinary Associations for consideration, and its principles were ostensibly accepted by the Provinces with perhaps the exception of one or two Associations. Since that time very little discussion has ensued and apparently Veterinary Associations are now content to drop the matter entirely. Excerpt from The Canadian Veterinary Record, Vol. 4: Jan. February, 1923 With the presentation of this, the first number of 1923, Volume IV, of the Canadian Veterinary Record makes its bow to the profession. Encouraged by the reception afforded this little periodical in the past, we take the opportunity to announce that the Editorial Staff are resolved to continue its publication this year. AS will be seen, some changes have been made in the Record over the old style, which we trust will be appreciated. While the size of the page is smaller, the actual contents have been increased by adding eight pages to the issue and using a slightly smaller type. We realize the vast extent of Canada, and the scattered nature of the profession, in whose care lies the health of the Dominion's greatest industry, and the fact that many veterinarians living in distant parts, are not overburdened with journals devoted to their service. With this knowledge it has been our aim, during the past three years to introduce the Record into every Province, City, Town and Village in Canada where there is a Veterinary Surgeon, and whose address we were able to obtain through all available sources. We have endeavoured to convey a message with every issue to gether with articles containing information of the latest achievements accomplished by workers in the many fields of Veterinary Science. We have endeavoured to stimulate the Veterinary Associations to use the columns of the Record for the publication of their proceedings with the idea of promoting by these means a more general understand ing between all members of the profession throughout Canada. Excerpt from The Canadian Veterinary Record, Vol. 4: June-August, 1923 Success in practice in these days does not altogether depend on professional ability, as many conditions are found over which the practitioner has no control. Living expenses, drug costs and overhead charges are so high, together with the difficulty in getting a proper financial return or perhaps bad debts, that many a man is really driven out of practice. We might as well admit the fact that none of us are in practice for the good of our health. With the extensive and expensive training of the veterinarian and the mental and physical energy he has to expend on a heavy country practice, he has the right to expect such a fair return on his investment, that he will be able to maintain a position comparable with that of other professions. Sometimes the veterinary profession is compared with that of dentistry, but how unlike the dentists we are. Their clients don't wait until the middle of the night to call them, nor are they asked to travel along bad roads in all weathers to work, in many cases, in draughty and ill-lighted barns. Then withal, they are able to demand practically a cash payment of their fees and get it. Why is this? We cannot, but believe it is because, though a much younger profession than the veterinary profession, they are more alive to their own interests; the reason is they have learned the art of combination and have adopted better business methods. Further, that they were astute enough to see that their interests lay in having a governing or controlling body. Where are we in this respect? - when in Ontario the oldest English speaking Province, it is said that not twenty-five per cent, even, of the practitioners, are members of their association? Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
