Excerpt from The Cambridge History of English Literature, Vol. 7 The early years of the reign of Charles I are made illustrious by a great outburst of song, which is very varied in character, and which suffered no diminution in volume or melody until the sound of the lute was drowned by that of the drum, and love-lyrics to Celia or Anthea gave place to the scurrilous abuse of the Rump Songs. The true home of this lyric, as of the French Pleiade song of the preceding generation, was the court, where the pastoral fancies and gallant inventions of cavalier poets were promptly set to music by composers in the royal service, and sung before the monarch at Whitehall. But, in the case of the greatest of these Caroline lyrists, the inspiration spread from court to country, and the most memorable of the H esperides songs are those which sing of hock-carts, country wakes and Devon maidens going a-maying. Excerpt from The Cambridge History of English Literature, Vol. 9 HE present volume, we hope, will shortly be followed by the tenth, dealing with the age of Johnson. As the canvas grows more crowded, we must ask our readers to take note that the grouping of writers, on the principles which we have endeavoured to follow in this work, makes it impossible, even were it desirable, to maintain a strict chronological order as to the inclusion of particular names in particular volumes. Thus, in the present volume, notices of several divines, and, again, of several dramatists, together with the mention of other names, have had to be reserved for its successor. Excerpt from The Cambridge History of English Literature, Vol. 1: Edited by Ward and Waller From time to time, buried treasure comes to light; things seemingly of a day suddenly reveal the strength that is in them and become things for all time; and the way then lies open for a profitable retrospect. Thus, the editors have thought it simpler to defer an enquiry into the first glimmerings of the English drama and an account of the miracle plays until towards the close of the second volume, and to deal, on broad lines, with the progress of the English language, as the vehicle of English literature, with changes in English prosody and with the work of universities and scholarship, towards the end of successive periods, rather than piecemeal at successive stages of each. With regard to future volumes - since the history of a nation's literature cannot be divorced from some consideration of its political, religious, and social life, including its manners as well as its phases of sentiment and fashion, its trivial thoughts no less than its serious movements - the editors have thought it well to make some provision for treating certain subjects more or less closely allied to literature pure or proper. Such are the literature of science and philosophy; and that of politics and economics; parliamentary eloquence; the work of schools and universities and libraries; scholarship; the pamphlet literature of religious and political controversy; the newspaper and the magazine; the labours of the press and the services of booksellers; homely books dealing with precept and manners and social life; domestic letters and street songs; accounts of travel and records of sport - the whole range of letters, in its widest acceptation, from the "Cambridge Platonists" to the "fraternity of vagabonds." And, since the literatures of the British Colonies and of the United States are, in the main, the literature of the mother-country, produced under other skies, it is intended to give, in their proper place, some account of these literatures also. Excerpt from The Cambridge History of English Literature, Vol. 5 The editors hope that readers of these volumes will find that the chapters supplement each other in particular passages, more especially in those which seek to summarise certain growths, such as the chronicle history, the domestic drama and the pastoral drama. Although an attempt has been made, wherever possible, to avoid discrepancies with regard to the dates of certain plays or to the shares of dramatists in plays written in conjunction, it is inevitable, in a work of composite authorship, that some such discrepancies should remain. The cross references which the editors have added in their footnotes will, it is hoped, enable students readily to test for themselves the nature of the evidence upon which individual conclusions are based. Excerpt from The Cambridge History of English Literature, Vol. 3 The effective support given us in our endeavours to provide a history for both the general reader and the student by the combination of a text abstaining as much as possible from technicalities, with bibliographies as full as possible of matter, has been a source of great encouragement to us in carrying on our task. We are convinced that it is the duty of a university press to endeavour both to meet the highest demands that can be made upon its productions by men of learning and letters, and to enable the many to share in the knowledge acquired by the few. It may interest our readers to know that, by permission of the Syndics of the Press, copies of Professor Manly's chapter on Piers the Plowman, in our second volume, have been circulated among its members by the Early English Text Society - the body of scholars best qualified to estimate the importance of this contribution. The offprint is accompanied by a few pages of pregnant "forewords" from the pen of the veteran founder and director of the Society, and by the article on the same subject contributed to Modern Philology in January, 1906, and Dr. Henry Bradley's letter in The Athenaeum of 21 April, 1906.
