Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from The Building of the British Empire: The Story of England's Growth From Elizabeth to Victoria, With Upwards of One Hundred Portraits and Illustrations From Contemporary Prints This was in 1689. In the following year Torring ton allowed a French fleet under De Tourville to snatch a victory from the combined English and Dutch fleets off Beachy Head. The Hollanders, who led the van, fought with signal bravery, as did some of the English, ships but others seemed to Shirk the contest. In this action the English lost a couple of vessels, two of their captains, and some four hundred men; while the Dutch lost two Ad mirals, with a large number of men, and were be sides obliged to Sink several of their vessels to prevent them falling into the enemy's hands. Both commanders were blamed, Torrington for not fight ing, the French Admiral for not following up his Victory, which, indeed, from his failure to do so, profited the victors but little.
