Excerpt from The Builder, Vol. 50: An Illustrated Weekly Magazine for the Architect, Engineer, Archaeologist, Constructor, Sanitary Reformer, and Art-Lover; January to June, 1886 Reference is naturally made to the remark able discovery of the portrait statues of the Vestals, which are of heroic size, with inscribed pedestals, although unfortunately the latter cannot be identified with the statues. One of the best of the wood-cuts shows a portion of one of these statues to a. Sufficiently large scale to enable us to judge of the excellence of the workmanship. Passing reference is made to the sites of the arches of Fabius, the earliest of the triumphal arches, and that of Augustus, and the chapters conclude by reference to the other most recent discoveries in the Forum.* The plan already referred to indicates the singular want of symmetry of the buildings of the Forum, which appear to have been placed in avery haphazard manner, sufficient to show that there never was any preconceived plan for the whole, and that they grew out of the require ments of the times.
